I am a couple of thousand miles short of a free upgrade on CO. During my next trip I'll pass that figure on the 1st flight. Each of the 4 flights (a pair each way) are lengthy 3,500 mile treks. I'd like to upgrade one of them but if I remember correctly, you're supposed to apply beforehand. Obviously I'll be away and won't be able to do this... or will I? Is there a way around this?

Yes, you are to request it beforehand.
I'd recommend that you request it on your second leg of your trip. You can request it during an 'open' itinerary, but not during a flight or on the a/c.

The bad news is that you will not be able to upgrade "en route". The miles may not clear for a couple days- this depends upon your booking method.
The good news is that you can buy 1,000 onepass miles for only $32 (up from $25). If you are a couple thousand miles short, you can buy them or transfer them from American Express Membership rewards or something similar.
Good Luck and Enjoy,
SR
P.S.- What is the routing . . . The Biz/First upgrading is quite complicated and envolves more than just miles.

Ramerinianair has a point, it does take days for the miles to post. On top of that, with 3500 miles looks like your going transatlantic from EWR - BizF seats are a limited and you may be without luck.

Thanks for the replies. The exact routing has not been determined but it will be roughly LGW-EWR-LIM and GIG-GRU-EWR-LGW. The 2nd set of flights will be 2-3 weeks after the first, so hopefully I can apply inbetween those flights. Does CO fly to EZE (where I'll be passing through between LIM and GIG)?
Sounds like it would be a good idea to buy the 3k miles I need, especially as they're priced in USD and the GBP<>USD exchange rate is so good!
BTW when I said "upgrade enroute" I didn't mean while in the air!!

Chris, look on the http://www.continental.com website, under contacts, it should be there. There is a limit, maybe it's on the website somewhere. Transferable to AA, probably not I would have thought, useable on VS, perhaps (codeshares).
