Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn was to announce today that his city will again approach the federal government about leasing part of the former El Toro MCAS for use as a commercial airport. Earlier attempts have been refused. Additionally, the base is located in Orange County which has held several ballot referendums on the use of the land. The most recent vote by Orange County was to turn down the use of the base as an airport.
