There is rainy and cold weather expected in NYC and the northeast USA today and will be getting colder to the point of near or below freezing (-2 to 0 C) by later this afternoon and evening, especially after 1800/6 pm, with poor visibility conditions. It is also possible that the late afternoon/early evening flight JFK-MAD would have been significantly delayed or cancelled as well due to the weather. Perhaps there was a mechanical/technical issue as well, that would make the a/c difficult to operate in poor weather conditions. I would also suspect that the passanger loads in the flight you asked about along with the return flight were low enough to condider not to run today with the risks involved and consolidate the passangers on the next day's flight when the weather is expected to be better.

Now I understand what a DL 763 was doing parked in MAD when I drove right next to the airport today at 3:00 P.M. as they usually depart a lot earlier. I used to be a frequent flyer on DL109/DL108 when I lived in the americas.

does anyone know why this flight was cancelled??
My sister said that there where only 20 people waiting for the flight, so it might have to do with the loads on the flight?? And tommarow it is a spanish hoilday so therefor the lods might have been low?

Hmm...officially, airlines don't cancel flights due to light loads...but unofficially, I have seen it happen. And falsely blaming it on the weather is another dirty trick I've seen the airlines use...remember, if it's weather-related, they don't have to provide hotel rooms, meals or any other compensation.
So, given that it likely would have lost money for the airline if they operated this round trip MAD-JFK-MAD with only 20 pax, and it sounds like Delta might have seized the opportunity to consolidate all the pax on the next day's flights without compensating them for their trouble.
I am not saying that this is definitely what happened here--I honestly don't have a clue. But it looks awfully suspicious.

I found out today that there where many stranded due to the cancellation of Flight 90. My friends where sopposed to be flying Delta Flight 90 yesterday and ended up getting bumped to buesniess class and had to go through Frankfurt.
On the way back they still fly through FRA but get to fly B class on Lufthansa.
When they called this morning from the plane they said that at JFK it was packed of people who had been scheduled on the flight to Spain.
Apparently the cancellation here in Spain was deffitenly not due to lack of people.
Once again this shows how cancelling screws up the entire system espcecially at a critical time of people coming back to vacation.
