AF's "Dedicate" News ...

Here is some news about the "DEDICATE" services launched by Air France, early 2004 :

DOH will be closed very soon : the 2 x Weekly flights CDG-DOH-CDG will stop operating after January 8th 2005.
Air France will continue to propose DOH to its customers via BEY, in partnership with MEA on the BEY-DOH leg.

Starting Mar. 29th, a 4th weekly CDG-KWI-CDG will be added to face the demand.

A 4th Frequency has already been added on CDG-PNR-CDG and will be kept duting the next summer season.

RUH was started last Dec.1st, nonstop from CDG 3 x Weekly (It was previously served via CAI ).
This flight proved to be very successful and a 4th weekly frequency will be added as soon as next January 31st

SSG (Malabo) and TAS (Tashkent) will continue to be served 2 x Weekly each.

AF is still negociating additional traffic rights to operate to KIS (Kish Island / Iran). AF preferred for the moment to use its rights to increase the frequencies on CDG-THR to 5 x weekly (A332).

Except DOH, all the "Dedicate" routes were already profitable after 6 months of operation.
SSG also had bad results at the beginning with load factors not exceeding 44 % but the results are now also much better and the route became profitable.
KWI, PNR, and RUH report load factors exceeding 80 %.


The "Dedicate" flights are operated by a fleet of 3 A319LR (F-GRXG/H/I )configured in two classes : 28 J / 54 Y.
A fourth a/c (F-GYAS) leased from "Aero Services" is also operating some "Dedicate" flights on behalf of AF (The a/c is painted in the AF livery and equipped with the same seat and configuration).

HB-IWC,

KWI is doing great, but AF prefers for the moment to add frequencies,and continue to opearte the A319LR, rather going 2 x Weekly with an A332.

Thanks for the update. One question however for this AF dedicate service . When looking at the timetable : the plane is not necessary flying back to CDG immediately after arriving. Sometimes the return flight is two days after. So where is the A319 going ? is the plane flying to a close dedicate destination in between ?

Qatar Airways flies daily CDG-DOH with their 330. I guess AF couldn't compete with their restricted timetable to DOH against a 5 star airline (Skytrax).

I must also say that I wonder Kuwait is not very flown more often. LH has an daily 333, while AF only has 4x A319.

Actually, the yield was quite low on CDG-DOH and AF needed an aircraft available to be able to increase the frequencies to other destinations more profitable.
Also DOH can be offered with an easy connection via BEY with AF's partner MEA, and as JoFMO said, DOH is already served daily by QR from CDG : Too big offer compared to the demand on the route.

Club3000 - the aircraft may stay at destination while the crew rest, and then operate back. At Astraeus we do that with our Djibouti and Malabo flights. The aircraft stays down route for 12-14 hours or so while the crew goes to a hotel, and the same crew operate the flight back. This saves having the crew spend 3 or 4 days in less than ideal accomodation.

Looks like the plane is on the ground for nearly 24 hours in TAS. I'd imagine it's for crew rest, as Bwaflyer suggested.

I guess Air France has done its homework on the 'Dedicate' scheduling, and found it appropriate to have the aircraft sitting on the ground for extended periods, but I can't stop but stating that the utilization of these aircraft is truly abysmal by any standard for medium haul operations.

I have another explanation for their sometimes wired schedule because I asked myself the question why they fly red-eyes both ways to some detinations and keep the plane parked the whole day at it's destination.

I always thought that it is due to the overwhelming support of red-eyes with the high yielding oil company passengers. But it could also be due to crew rest times, so that the same crew can fly the route back.

Certainly our Malabo route at AEU is flown as two night flights. The early morning arrival into SSG allows the passengers to transfer to their oil plants either on shore or off shore in day light, complete a hand over from their departing colleagues, who can then make a day light transfer to the city, have a couple of drinks (as their installations are dry), and the board a night flight to the UK, allowing them to sleep and get morning connecting flights (useful for the large number of US originating passengers)

But what you forget is that on your southward flight passengers from North America have to wait the whole day in CDG. Therefore other airlines like LH make their southward to LAS, PHC as an early morning departure.

If all the flights get back to CDG in the morning,,,the passengers coming off the dedicate flights have connection possibilities to the enter AF network.

Plus they also save on crew costs.

Just my 2 cents.

The schedules may suit oil workers but it's mainly an aircrew issue - I remember when Tarom flew their A310 service to Beijing once a week, there was no way the airline could afford to put the whole crew in a hotel for a week, nor I suspect would the crew have liked it. So the A310 would be parked on a remote stand, the crew go and get 40 winks, come back to the airport in the evening, power up the same aircraft again, load up and fly home.
