I'm sure this topic has been discussed on here but I had trouble finding it...I am a United Silver Premier member and I'm flying next thursday IAD - FCO via MUC, and wanted to know how Economy Plus compares to regular Economy?
Does economy plus get served a better meal and/or free drinks, or is it just a matter of more space and same service?

Exact same service, but you do get served first usually which means on domestic flights you get your choice of buy on board first, so you always get your selection if they stock it. The seat pitch is the biggest difference. UA has just decided to eliminate the open bar on international flights.

Adam, it's "just" more space - the service is the same throughout all of Economy Class (which always suited me just fine - it's the space I like, I really don't need any more service than what you get in Y-class).

only extra legroom. same seats and same service. economy plus on UA is one of the reasons i would fly them again. can't imagine how horrible it would be in the the 'normal' economy seats.

How is E+ allocated to the ruffians? (non status folks?  Big grin). I doubt they can sell it as a separate product because IMO its not far enough removed to be sold for a higher price. Is it a free for all at check-in? Or a small supplement for more legroom? Or a case of bunging £50 to the check-in agent?

I personally believe it is. Not too long ago I flew UA from LAX-JFK on FF Miles. Going to JFK, the plane was changed from a 767 to 757 and my brother was separated from me. The check-in agent simply reassigned me from seat 23 to seat 12...E+! Big grin. On the way back it turned out that I was booked on United PS.

If you use EasyCheck-In, sometimes it will offer to upgrade you to Economy Plus for a service fee of $25 to $100 each way.

i've lucked out...the last few times i've flown UA i've been able to get into E+. i've actually just asked for it if they had any open seats when i was checking in (and i'm not a premier member...just regular Mileage plus member).

but let me tell ya...i'm 6'2" and those xtra inches of pitch help out so much for me.

E+ rules.

It's the single reason I'd fly UA long haul compared to most competition
(now that AA has introduced their LRTC concept  Smile).

I can get on E+ seats using my status (Star Alliance Gold on AC). I believe that
if you pay full fare economy you'll automatically get an E+ seat. Also, as
SegmentKing pointed out, you can sometimes pay a small fee to move to the
E+ cabin. I'm not sure whether I'd pay for the extra legroom (maybe on really
long flights), but it's nice to get it for free with my status.

The downside with flying UA is that, if you do not get an E+ seat, the leg
room at the back is pretty miserable and apparently worst than most other
airlines. My girlfriend flew FRA-SFO on UA at the back last year and she's
still bitching about it.

Generally E+ is designated for Upper Mileage Plus level pax. Anyone who is Premier or above. But if it works out that you can seat change to E+ at the gate that works as well. Generally at IAD they have no problem with doing that. But same seat, service, food, drink,etc.

I'm a gold on UA's mileage plus and i'm on economy plus often.

I dont' really see the difference in service (They did welcome me by name ONCE!) but yeah.. food/drinks and everythign is the same except you get a wdier seat pitch.

Its for sure better than normal economy

I am one of the masses, regular mileage plus person. But each time I fly, when I asked to be put in Eplus I have always gotten it! Thats why i love UA. Too bad they dont have E+ in (all?) their 777s. Well, they did not.

I doubt that they have it in the Asia 777's. I remember when I used to work for ACA and non-revving to NRT, they did not have it on the Asian birds. They may have them now, who knows.

In fact, I think this refit has been completed. Certainly for the United Business seat pitch, at the very least.

It is really nice about how they do let any passenger in Econ+ at the gate. Econ+ is fore premier flyers and high fares, so those are the only people that can get seats in economy plus preassigned. After talking to a UA gate agent at IND, she said that she will always give people econ+ at the gate if they ask for a seat change. It is there, and a nice feature that should be used if it is available. There is no reason to keep people in the back of the plane. Easy checkin will let you pay for an "upgrade" sometimes. Overall it is a really well handled thing for UA. It is not like first class where seats should go empty if there are not enough deserving flyers to fill them. I like how most agents handle it.
