The photographer says that there were 3 missed approaches and a diversion to Heathrow with this EK 773. What was going on a MAN to cause it?

The UK has been battered by severe gales over the past few days. I think it was mentioned in another thread that the winds at Manchester this day (Jan 8th) were very bad, and as a result, the Emirates 773 made 3 attempts at landing, and then diverted to Heathrow instead. The strong winds are coming from the north - the further south you go, the calmer they are.

Mix of high gusts of wind and windshear (if I remember correctly +/- 20 knots); there must have been at least 15 go-rounds that day. I've listed below some of the go-rounds:

FCA 863D: 1112
UAE 17: 1125 1132 1147 (with div to LHR after that one)
WZZ 405W: 1149
NJE 5561: 1157
LGL 4983: 1218
BRT 1VA: 1248 1309 (with div to LPL after that one)
BRT 17F: 1208 1224 (with div to LPL after that one)

Whereabouts has that shot been taken from?

The photographer seems to be elevated. The only place I can think is on level 13 of the T1 car park but I thought there was a fence at the runway end and things obstructing too.

I didn't know they had started scheduling the 773 to MAN, the growth of EK is phenominal.

Did DL's Flt 64 get in to MAN or did it also have to divert?

EK is occasionally scheduling in 772s and 773s in place of A330s, only another 5 months before they become permanent fare on EK17; before MAN-DXB went double daily, it wasn't unusual for them to use 777s for a long period of time in place of A330s.

It's also high season for EK with Hajj traffic and returning students. January is traditionally busy with the academic traffic from Asia.

Many of the students avoid Heathrow and connect via Frankfurt, Dubai, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
