How To Fly On A TriStar? / Attn Portuguese Members

Hi everybody,

sadly, the era of TriStars is drawing to a close without me ever having had a chance to ride on one.

Encouraged by two fellow members (hello Sabena332 and TriStar500 Big grin ) I´m posting this:

Short of going to Kinshasa on Hewa Bora Airlines, what are the options for a European to get on a TriStar?

Specifically, dear Portuguese members, what about Yes Linhas Aereas and Luzair? Do they just sell package tours or also just flights? Which tour operators have Yes and Luz Air in their programmes, and can you book a vacation with them from outside Portugal?

Or maybe one of the Airevents guys reads this and gets an inspiration to charter a TriStar for a sightseeing flight  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Thanks and obrigado,

Daniel Smile

Join the RAF. Aren't they the largest operator?

I love long German words like 'Freundschaftsbezeigungen'.

Hi Airsicknessbag! (Cool nick name...  Big thumbs up)

YES Linhas Aereas is a joint venture between TAP and Agência de Viagens Abreu (A local travel agency). They only operate charter flights. You have to hurry if you still want to fly them, because due to the delay scandals in the summer, YES Linhas Aereas is going to be replaced by White, which will only fly A310's coming from TAP Air Portugal.

Luzair? Forget about that... I have been told by a couple of Air Luxor pilots, one of them really close to Paulo Mirpuri, the CEO of Air Luxor, that Luzair is basically a ghost company to let the Tristars dye..

You forgot EUROAtlantic Airways, they are also a Portuguese charter company that operates charters flights for Grupo Pestana, but then again, due to the delays scandals of this summer, they will be retiring they're Tristars, and replacing them with either B767-300ER or A330.

Hope that helped!

Regards!

Thanks for posting this thread, I am very interested as well in flying on the Tristar.

TAP340, thanks for the information, even if they don't sound good.

Seems that I must start another thread in the Non Aviation Forum with the title: "What to do in Kinshasa", the flight on Hewa Bora Airlines from BRU to FIH looks indeed like the best possibility to get the L1011 Big grin.

ATA (IF they still exist by then) is planning to fly the L1011 again in June between LAX and CUN, that shouldn't be too hard for a European to get on.
Gee Bee in Greece might also do something with the pax L1011s they are now acquiring, but probably sketchy, charters etc ops if they even get in the air.

nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Well, we could always contact eitheir YES or LUZAIR and try to organize a special flight like the IranAir SP flight, or more recently, the Swiss MD11 farewell.
If there is enough interest, it could become cheaper that just try to book a travel somewhere with them.

I for one, have never ridden one, love the plane, and would jump at a chance to go on a farewell tour.

Pedro, thanks for the information (and the compliment on my username Big grin ). Just checked the websites of Pestana and Abreu (and the three airlines´).

Seems to me that only Abreu´s is half decent - but the information they give about the flights is kind of generic:

"Day 1 - Flight from Lisbon to Varadero (Special Flight)"
...
"Included: Flight in Tourist Class, 20 kilos baggage allowance" etc.

Maybe I should put myself in contact with them like "Hello, I´m a little mad and I want to go to the Domincan Republic or Cuba, no matter where, as long as it´s a TriStar. My doctor says I´m not dangerous to other people."  Nuts

Pedro, Yes claim they do medium haul flights, but all European trips at Abreu are with TAP or other European carriers. What´s up with that?

Generally speaking, would you reckon there´s a realistic chance to book a package tour with Abreu and be SURE to fly Yes?

Obrigado again,

Daniel Smile

Airsicknessbag,

I guess you didn't read my answer. Maybe my ideia is best if your plan is to fly the L1011. Currently Yes is operating the 763 on the Varadero and brazilian routes, CS-TMX is flying for Corsair.

Luis

Luis, yes, when I was typing my message, there had just been the first two replies. Damn, Yes already have the 767? So their website is outdated.

Yes, maybe a charter for a sightseeing flight à la airevents would be the best option. I guess it would be pretty difficult to fill all the seats in order to get a good price per person.

>>>ATA (IF they still exist by then) is planning to fly the L1011 again in June between LAX and CUN

That´s a big IF, right?  Big grin LAX-CUN is a 752 according to amadeus, I´ll keep an eye on that route.

I just checked that as well, Amadeus showed a 752 for both months, June and July. Imagine you book a Germany-LAX return flight as well as a LAX-CUN return just to find yourself later on a 752  Pissed.

Yes, maybe a charter for a sightseeing flight à la airevents would be the best option.

I am not the biggest fan of these sightseeing flights but now I agree that this would be the easiest way to get a Tristar flight.

Neither am I, but when I can get a really cool type which doesn´t fit my travel pattern at all, I do it. Like, in the past, Belavia Yak 40, Concorde or, hopefully in the future the airevents DC8 at BSL.

LMAO  Big thumbs up

You are correct, I am sure some people complained about the equipment change (damned old plane, it is unsafe, I stay at home and sue my tour operator).

During the summer the Euro Atlantic L-1011 did some flights on the Dublin-Sanford route for Avia Jet. Try contacting Avia Jet to see if they will lease this plane again.

What Corsair routes is the Yes L1011 flying? Maybe another operator will lease it too, perhaps Avia Jet?

I cannot assure you that you would fly the Tristar for sure, but I guess the probability would be high since they don't have that many aircraft. This Easter I'm going to Varadero (Perhaps...), maybe I'll fly the Tristar!

Sometimes, YES acts as back up for TAP Air Portugal. My parents went to Paris last month and altought they booked TAP, they flew YES.

The special flight would be a great idea! I'm sure I could get some more people to go, as I study Aeroespacial engineering, along with other aviation fans!

Air Luxor / Luzair
1 TriStar currently decomposing at AMS
1 TriStar Corsair

Yes
2 TriStars flying- for now

EuroAtlantic
1 TriStar flying?

In a few months they'll all be gone, it seems...

Back in 2000, I "flew" a Tristar at European Aviation at Bournemouth Airport.

I do not know if it is still available to the public, but you could try them.

CS-TMX (along A330 LTU D-ALPG), made a flight yesterday for Corsair to Nairobi and Mombasa.Saw it also flying for Corsair to POP ,CUN ,RUN , FDF , PTP.
CS-TMP was ferried yesterday after a Corsair flight to Amman from ORY for a check by Royal Jordanian.
I had the pleasure to fly with L1011-500 Euro Atlantic on a TAP flight between LIS and ORY , and was impressed by the comfort of this plane. The cabin seems wider than this of the DC10 , and despite to be on the rear had not suffering of strong noise .In fact this plane is not noisy.
A real pleasure to have done this Tristar flight.
Hope every people who would like to do so , will do , and i can assure you , they will not be desappointing..............but hurry up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I practically grew up flying on TAP's Tristar to LIS from BOS... boy i miss those jets and sometimes my childhood memories visiting my grandparents in Portugal... amazing engines... comfort... and the air phones.. or whatever you call those headphones that are basicaly plastic hollow tubes....

would be cool if Lockheed would get back in the game of building commercial jets...

Airbus or Boeing - it's all good to me!

For sure you can fly on ATA from LAX-CUN-LAX.. From June until September they operate the CUN flights using L-100 on Saturday and Sundays only. Last year I had a chance to fly for the first and last time on a L-1011, great flight, worth it to ride. Flew on N161AT.

Count me in for a very last L1011 flight - although I fortunately got to ride the Ten Eleven fairly frequently during the 80's and early 90's (10 flights on a Dash-1 of LTU, 1 flight on a Dash-500 by DL), I would love to get on a farewell flight.  Love

The L10 is the only airplane I have sort of an emotional affiliation with (now how sad is that!?), so I would be willing to spend a bit to get on one, the best choice for me being an "AirEvents" flight like the 747SP one recently at CGN.

Somebody should definitely suggest a L1011 sight seeing flight to air events. I have the feeling I will never ride on one of these great birds, but would jump at the chance if presented with the opportunity.
