Runway numbers correspond to the magnetic heading of that runway. For example, Runway 18 at Washington National has a heading of 185.7 degrees. Runway 23 at Charleston WV (Yeager) has a heading of 233.5 degrees. Hope that this helps.

Cheers,
Markus

Runways are numbered according to their compass heading. Rounded to the nearest tenth degrees. For example if you had a runway and it was pointed 173 degrees north it would be numbered runway 17. If it was pointed 98 degrees it would be numbered runway 10. The oposite end will be numbered by it's heading the other way 17-35 for example. 170 degrees-350 degrees.

Runways also can have a letter behind them, if there is a second runway ponting in the same direction nest to them. 17L and 17R for example. The L and R designate Left and Right. You can have a C behind the numbers too. This in the case of three runways the middle one is designated CENTER.

There are a couple of exceptions to this rule but this covers about 99 percent of the runways in use. The major exception is LAX, They have four parrell runways. So they designated two of them on one side of the airport 25L 25R and the other two 24L 24R. It is supposedly less confusing.

I hope this helps. Sorry I couldn't spell parrell right once in this msg.
