AA 738's/MD-80's/763's Now 757's From ORD-SFO?

I've been flying the the SFO-ORD-SFO route quite extensively for a while now. The only flights I've used (and seen) are with the 738's and the 763's. There might be an occasional MD80 flight which I don't know about. Having said that, and knowing that AA saying they are going to be using only the MD-80's and 763's from out of ORD to SFO (and other places), why is AA providing a 757 to SFO from ORD (I know because I've booked my return flight on a 757....

Any info on this?

It may be that there is a lot of demand for the flight with that departure time, so AA has put a 757 on that flight, even though the 757s are supposed to fly leisure routes or routes that have stiff competition from an LCC.

It may also have something to do with the flight caps at ORD. AA may prefer to run a 7th non-stop from ORD to SFO with an MD-80, but with the limitations, running 1 757 may solve the capacity problem.

Does AA only use the -83s on the flights between ORD and the west coast? Or do they also use -82s on those routes too? Also, anyone know the breakdown of -82s and -83s at AA now with the TW aircraft? I thought that it was like 224/35 or really close to that before, but I know that TW had been buying quite a few -83s before being taken over.

In February there is only one 757 and one 767 round-trip per day in the SFO-ORD market. The rest are MD80's. Why is anybody's guess (unless you work inside AA's Capacity Planning section).

Does AA only use the -83s on the flights between ORD and the west coast?
ORD-west coast is done by either MD82 or MD83... doesn't matter. Specific acft are not assigned until 24 hours prior to the flight. Some city-pairs require MD83 assignments, but not ORD-west coast cities.

interesting, because 1/2 the time I fly this route, which is every 2 weeks, the loads are not that good...only a few times (during the summer) have the loads been good.

the 4:30 p.m. flight out SFO (I take that one 80% of the time) is always 1/2 empty...not once has it been even close to being filled...fall, winter, spring, summer, you name it, and its still bloody empty

if anything, I thought they would cut their service down to 3-4
MD-80's only and completely drop the 763 flight.....oh well..guess that's why i'm only an armchair ceo...lol!!!!

Thats my point if they are not filling a wide body or let alone a 737 why not drop it to all MD-80's and then drop a few flights from the route. Place them where they make money or start a new destination.

Perhaps AA's load factors on this route are mediocre because they are flying into a UA hub, and it sounds like they have {UA} wrapped up pretty tightly.

I agree with all of you. They should drop a few of those flights so they can fill up what they have and go out with larger loads.

How do they do with the rest of the Bay Area? ORD-SJC, ORD-OAK? I believe they have or did have more flights on the ORD-SJC-ORD route than UA. Has this changed since they have been cutting SJC back left and right?

Horror of all horrors! Look at the schedule effective April 2. All M80 and a single 763 due to the new MIAA base for the 738's.

Laca773...i've flown the SJC-ORD route a few times also, they seem to do better, but I haven't flown enough to say I'm confident of that statement. I've flown SFO-ORD enough times to confidentaly make my statement.

AA doesn't fly OAK-ORD directly, if I can recall, the flight is via DFW.

We'll see what happens in a few months when they drop the 738's to the MD-80's.

I still think they can drop one of the flights, go down to all MD-80's, or at the least, downgrade the one 763 to a 757...

on the flight which I booked, the have BOTH available at different time slots!!!!

strange if you ask me.....my feeling is that they are kind of "feeling" their way around for this route......

You have to remember that just because a flight isn't full doesn't mean it isn't making money. OFD-SFO probably has more passengers flying for business than ORD-LAS, ORD-MCO, or ORD-JAC. While business flyers certainly are trying to avoid paying walk-up fares, my guess is that the yield on ORD-SFO is better, so it doesn't need as high a load factor as other routes to generate revenue.

Also, AA's business model is built on the assumption that business flyers want a lot of options, so AA runs more flights on some routes than back when it used a lot of widebodies on domestic routes. I think ORD-LAX has 6 or 7 more roundtrips now than back in the early 90s when it was nothing but DC-10s and 767s.

It's been a while since I flew ORD-SFO. Back then I was flying 757s and 767-200s, but they always seemed to be full or just a few empty middle seats.
