Singapore's SALE Mulls Plans To Buy Additional Aircraft

Lee's comments follow a Straits Times report Thursday that said SALE is looking to buy between 30 and 50 new aircraft, and that it is already evaluating proposals from Airbus (ABI.YY), Boeing Co. (BA) and Brazil's Embraer for single- aisle planes with more than 100 seats.

I would suggest that Boeing send some of it's best 737 salespeople on the next flight from SEA to Singapore....Smaller versions of 737 would be good for them, as well documented throughout the world.

Expect an order for Embraer 190/195s... Likely the best positioned and most economic planes in the 100-seat category. Both the 737-600 and A318 clearly lose out here - and another lessor order here won´t change fortunes for these planes. And the 717... well, no need to keep this line going. Just shut it down.

Airtran likes the 717, so does Midwest. It is a fine aircraft that needs to be priced aggressively for this order; but I do think that it is a losing proposition to float the 737-600. The A-318 is not good for the same reasons. I see it as between the EMB190 and the 717 for those reasons. Even if Boeing loses money on the 717 on this one order, it is needed to keep the line open and for PR. Besides Airtran will order more in the future, I think they have 6 left to recieve.

My bet is the 737NG series or even more likely, the A320 series, because SilkAir already operates them. A LCC in Asia needs capacity and comfort, even on longer flights. Nothing against RJs. But they are simply not suited for the mass market or LCCs.

SALE is an Airbus client already, but diversification would be a good idea if they want to expand.

My money would be on Embraer grabbing this one with their hot new products.

SALE stands for Singapore Aircraft LEasing. They are not an airline as such, and lease aircraft globally. Not just to LCCs but full service and charter carriers.

I believe SALE will most likely buy from more than one manufacturer. They only have 13 deliveries of A320 through to early 06, most of these are placed. Given that a few LCC have recently ordered A320 series in the region they'll need to at least order some more A320 series to ensure their portfolio can meet growth. So we could see this as part of the 50 frame order.

no - they are not an airline, but SQ owns a substantial stake (35.5%) with the singapore government (thorugh government companies) hold another 29%.

Whitehatter, to me it seems this order will be for "budget airlines". Hence the Embraers don't make sense in my opinion. Surely in Asia you could fill the 130 seats of an A319/737-700 use the budget business model.

I saw a video Q&A with senior exectuves from SALE about this order. The 35% that is owned by WestLB was only recently aquired by them from Boullioun Leasing. The executives said that given no cross shareholding will be retained by Boullioun that they will not be working as closely as they did in the past and this is another reason why they'll need to enhance the size of their leasing portfolio. I reckon we'll see pretty much a split order overall between Airbus and Boeing and from the way these guys were speaking we may see a few widebodies as well. But most definately an add on order for A32X series.

It all depends where they are going to fly them.

I had to double check but I'm quite sure that all the articles state that SALE is looking for 100-seat aircraft... not for 135-seat aircraft.  Smile

Let's see... the E190/195 have only 2-abreast seating, and the seats and aisle are wider than on the 73G and A320... could you explain just how this makes the E-jets... uncomfortable... particularly on longer flights?

Nothing against RJs. But they are simply not suited for the mass market or LCCs.

OK, I guess that B6 is NOT an LCC, or that AC is NOT a major airline.  Smile

I think with the 717-200 now out of the picture, expect SALE to finalize an order for 30-50 Embraer 190/195 planes before this year ends. I think most of those Embraers will be leased to airlines in Indonesia who need to fly to all those smaller islands from Jakarta in addition to the larger single-aisle planes now used.

So now that its gone, I'd agree that the E190/195 would be a frontrunner.

I can't really think of any other airliner in that 100 seat market, given the 320/73G both have over 100 seats.
