Ladies and gentlemen:

Continuing from another thread...

This morning, an Argentine-registered Boeing 747 not pertaining to flag carrier Aerolíneas Argentinas landed at Madrid-Barajas airport. After many months of suspense and a couple of deals which never bore fruit, struggling carrier Southern Winds have finally put in an impressive 4-engined appearance at the Spanish capital, and on schedule too.

The aircraft, LV-AZF, which first flew almost 22 years ago for Cathay Pacific, should herald a new chapter for Southern Winds, who can finally put the strenuous days of depending on a single aircraft (a Boeing 767) for the EZE-MAD sector behind them. If all goes well, a second 747-200 should be arriving shortly, as part of an ambitious expansion programme funded by Argentine tycoon Martín Varsávsky, which promises to see a total of seven Jumbos sporting the "SW" logo on their tails.

It is with cautious optimism that we can say that Aerolíneas finally have an Argentine competitor on their most profitable international destination, and having flown with both, I can assure you that the decision is always a tough one, especially with Southern Winds offering promotional return fares of €590/US$747 for both EZE-MAD and EZE-MAD-BCN. Nonetheless, it is not certain as to which cities Southern Winds intend to add besides the obvious candidates (MIA and JFK once CAT II restrictions are lifted).

A very Happy New Year to Southern Winds, and may they continue to deliver on their promises.

Saludos a todos!

ZXV

According to the reservation systems it is only operating to MAD on Thursday ?!

Hola Chiguire!

The 767 was operating 4 x weekly services to MAD; to me it sounds more probable that A4 will use the 747 3 x weekly to make the MAD service daily. Once a week makes no sense--it would hinder more than it would help the airline.

Saludos,

"I can assure you that the decision is always a tough one, especially with Southern Winds offering promotional return fares of €590/US$747 for both EZE-MAD and EZE-MAD-BCN"

I've flown on both as well (last time was MAD-EZE-MAD in May for only 520€ tax included!) and what you say is true, the decision is tough because from my orevious experiences on A4 (never flew domestic), I have to say that service was very good, especially considering the price! And I'm sure that anyone that has been on A4 will agree that the F/A's are among the most beautiful in aviation!  Big thumbs up
Seriously, A4 is a very good airline and service is not bad at all, better than other "big" airlines (it's not my intention to start an anti x thread so I'll keep 'x' for myself) and I seriously recomend to fly with A4.

saludos!

Si, con sus nuevos "pollos de primavera"!  Big grin

I've only flown twice with A4; MDQ-AEP last February (on an ex-MJ 737), and EZE-MAD at the end of May on the ex-TWA 767. Service was great on both (well, what can you do wrong on a 40-minute sector like MDQ-AEP?!), but particularly the latter. Now it's a little more complicated for me since A4's partner UX quit LGW, so now I'm considering the feasability of flying BA between LGW and MAD, and A4 between MAD and EZE. Amazingly, such a combination still works out cheaper than both IB and AR (ni hablar de BA o RG); would you know if it is possible (i.e. a smooth connection with two separate tickets and two separate, unassociated airlines)?

I've managed to persuade a number of sceptical friends and relatives in Argentina that A4 is the way to go--how I love being proven right!  Big thumbs up

Saludos!

Hola LVZXV

My experience say that if all goes well, a connection with two separate tkts in different airlines, well great, no problem. BUT if for any reason things go wrong then you're up shit creek without a paddle. None of the airlines will make themselves responsible and you'll probably will end up having to pay for a new tkt.

These are my principles but if you don't like them I have others

Che ZXV:

Good for SWinds... any news of them returning to Santiago? They should send that nice 747 and kick some LA/AR ass!
