What Alliance Would Suit Air India Best In The US?

With the open-skies agreement between the USA and India, what is everyone's thoughts about Air India more aggressively pursuing membership in a global alliance? Or would it be a mistake considering AI currently codeshares with many airlines in different alliances? AI would be wise to look for a US domestic codeshare partner if they do not join an alliance. With service to Chicago, and likely service to San Fransisco and Washington-Dulles in the near future, United would be a logical partner. But other domestic US options would include Continetntal who has a hub Newark or even Delta who serves India and has mid sized gateway at New York-JFK. However, the bulk of secondary cities that Air India should offer customers via a code share in the USA are not offered by Delta via JFK, only via their hubs in Atlanta and Cincinnati. American with nicely located hubs in Chicago, Dallas and Miami as well as large operations in Los Angeles and New York is another possible option.

Considering AI currently codeshares with AF and LH, could they link up with multiple US partner in competing alliances, for example United via Chicago but Continental via Newark?

Thats the purpose of AI, isn't it? To serve the INDIA market, NOT the BOM and DEL O&D markets. Why do you think EK has been able to take passengers away from AI on flights between Europe and Hyderabad, Chennai, and Cochin? Because transiting BOM is a nightmare.

I want a midnight hub at BOM would be good for international transit, and daytime hub banks for domestic travellers.

As far as an alliance goes, it really is unnecessary. I see why AI would want access to second tier USA markets via codeshare, but alliances really work well when all carriers benefit.

Why would say DL codeshare with AI if the DL pax can't get a decent codeshare connection to HYD? If I were DL and I was interested in the HYD market, I would sooner codeshare via LH or EK than AI.

I think AI would be better in the Star Alliance because AI codeshares w/ LH on many flights as Chicago i believe has 1 flight to FRA and 1 to LHR (correct me if im wrong).

AI and LH are strong together and that is why i think that AI would make a good partner in S/A.

As I've said many times on this forum, Air India is viewed as a carrier of last resort in South India, and as I've said many other times, Air India needs to make Mumbai a functioning hub with a feeder system, whether it is AI itself or IC or someone else, bringing traffic into Mumbai airport to connect to international flights without having to transfer airports or wait for 15 hours.

Delta is a bad option for codeshare anyway- their US hubs don't help AI and DL will, effective May 11th have better connectivity with South India from the USA than AI has ever had. I threw DL in for discussion purposes, but I was thinking more along the lines of UA, CO or AA all of whom could use some access to Mumbai and Delhi bound traffic.

BTW, based on what I've been hearing around Atlanta, Chennai may not be the last destination Delta adds in India. They are not interested in returning to Delhi, but are somewhat interested Bangalore when the new airport is built. The same for HYD. It's still a few years off, and it really depends on DL's financial health and how the Chennai flights do.

Air India is a lost case. Its only a matter of time before Indias national shame is shut down for good.

I examined just this question in my 200p article, tb published in summer and myself have found the following conclusions:

- AI does at the moment very well not joining an alliance, because the individual code share agreements, suited for the demand, do very well, as opposed to joining an entire alliance with partners who are not attractive - alliance partners at the moment would gain too much of the Indian market, while AI cannot really fully profit from arrangements dt lack of a/c

- However, in the long-term, AI must join an alliance.. considering the LH approach, and talks with AC, UA, BD, Star seems to be the best partner

This is just a short synopsis.. however, a merger with IC would do good for every alliance.. oitherwise, AI cannot offer an attractive internal India network
