World Airways this morning announced that it had just signed a multi-year $116 million contract with EVA Air of Taiwan. World will place a total of 3 MD-11F's with EVA for service from TPE to various cities in the U.S. This is the largest civilian contract in World's 57 year existence.

Will World convert two of their passenger MD-11s into freighters for this contract? If not, where will the additional planes come from? I had heard speculation that World might be considering turning most of their MDs into cargo planes, because of the demand, and replacing them with 777s on the passenger side. That would make sense to me.

No, we're not converting any of our planes. These 2 are former Korean pax planes that are being converted now. There also has been no talk at all about getting 777's. If anything, we need smaller a/c than we currently fly.

Thanks for the info, Clipper. Glad to see that World is growing, especially on the commercial side. I'm surprised that there is still interest in possibly going to smaller aircraft because it looked like the 767 wasn't going to happen. What other options are there - 757s I guess? Any time frames on going to the other type?
