I was looking to possibly visit Boston for Spring break. NW is offering flights from DFW-BOS connecting in DTW or MSP for only $158 total. Thats amazing.
Does anyone know why this fare is so low. This is $100 dollars cheaper than the fare setter, Airtran.

You can thank DL for that. That have all airlines dropping fares across the board. It is the last thing that U.S carriers need at this time. DL was stupid for starting this.

I don't think this has anything to do with DL. Thats why it perplexes me. This is $150 cheaper than delta. This is $100 cheaper than anyone else. Is NW really hurting this much in DFW?

Nah, it's not really DL's fault--they only cut the highest walkup fares and eliminated Saturday night stays. That may just be a good deal; NW has a pretty weak DFW presence if I'm not mistaken--almost all D and no O if you get what I mean. I think the reaction to DL's move, especially by other airlines is pretty funny--the American CEO (forget his name) said in today's STL Post Dispatch that the DL decision was "puzzling." Makes it sound as if DL is run by a lunatic.
I'll have to check other legs to/from DFW and see if that's the main source of the low price; wouldn't think that any NW hub to Boston would be that cheap...

Well, must have been a 1hr sale, or a mistake. I looked again an hour later, no less, and the fares were back to the 250 status quo fare. This is the fare that is set by FL, and matched by the other carriers.

Or somebody else snatched it up. NW always seems to have the best fares out of BOS though. Problem is they don't offer much in terms of p2p, it's always via one of the hubs, I guess that's why their fares are cheaper.

NW apparently had some sort of fare sale yesterday for Mon-Thu travel through the end of March. I saw a story on the news last night that had JAX-LGW or JAX-CDG at only $158+ taxes. I checked NWA.com and it was starting at $213+ which is still about half of the regular pre tax cost.

That might not be a good thing for AA, as they have the 777 on DFW-BOS right now. That would mean they could only be three quarters full for the next few months.

I think Delta are banking on a lot more people travelling now that the fares are lower. Just like what happens when Southwest or any of the other LCC's move into a market.
I hope they are right, if not they are not only going to kill themselves, but a few other airlines with them. It would be nice to see a few Southwest and Jet Blue hybrid schemes around for a while!

I keep seeing posts that "Delta is stupid for cutting revenue by 5%." Why? Very few passengers/businesses are willing to pay $1k+ domestic walk up fares; in fact, they just create animosity. Yes, they cut the priciest fares by ~50%, but if you read the Wall Street Journal or other economic publications, they have been pointing out for a while that fewer and fewer top fare domestic tickets are being sold. The market has changed. Airlines must adapt. Although DFW-BOS for $158 can't be above the integrated CASM for a connecting flight.
Why the big airlines MUST drop their last minute air fares:
from: http://www.air-transport.org/about/d.aspx?nid=7955 More than 90 percent of the tickets sold by U.S. airlines are discounted, with discounts averaging two-thirds off full fare. Fewer than 10 percent pay full fare, most of them last-minute business travelers.
From: http://www.nypost.com/wealth/38062.htm "Business travelers, whose lives revolve around collecting frequent-flier miles, may begin shifting back to an airline like Delta," said Aviation Daily's Lott. "Before, the price difference was so significant, they couldn't justify it to their boss. Now that the gap is smaller, so you may see some of business travelers move back to the legacy airlines."
