How Do Airlines Operate Ultra-Long-Haul Flights?

I was wondering about the crew. So for instance, JL flies NRT-JFK-GRU. Do they have a crew based in JFK? Or do they take them to JFK on some of JL's previous flights and work on GRU? Same with QF because they have flights stopping in SIN from SYD and head onto LHR. I know that they have plenty of these kinds of stop-over ultra long range flights but I never knew quite about the crew and how they work at it.

And for instance, those are ultra-long-haul but for instance, JL11/12 stops in YVR and heads onto MEX which is about a five hour flight. So just out of curiosity does anybody have some information?

On typical circumstances I'm guessing they would do NRT-JFK, take a couple of days off and do JFK-GRU and then take a couple of days off and do GRU-JFK and then get a couple days off and do JFK-NRT. Something like that...depending on how the flights are scheduled..the days off in between would obviously vary.  Smile

The answer to that question is No. The pilot flying the JFK-GRU leg would have flown the NRT-JFK leg the day or 2 before. Rested in NY, then take over the the onward leg to GRU or back to NRT. Basically the pilot flies point A to B, rests 24 to 48 hours, then takes the onward B to C flight or B back home to A. At least that what I was told from a ANA captain at IAD I had lunch with a few months back.

For instance, JL on their MEX run, their AC rests in MEX for about 15 hours or so but do you think the crew and the pilots are all the same and they have to return to YVR the next day?

I know that Qantas and Air Newzealand have seperate British Cabin Crew who fly the LHR-Singapore and LAX legs. Then that crew will spend about a day or two resting and fly back to the UK.

When I was Cabin Crew on BOAC 707s operating Around the World Services, all our trips lasted three weeks. There were three flights in each direction, so eastabout we would operate something like this - it varied according to day of week - and not all destinations below would be on one itinerary.

LHR ZRH FCO THR KHI DEL CCU RGN SIN DRW SYD DRW HKG TYO HNL SFO JFK LHR

We just slipped until the next aircraft came through on the RTW routing.

The fun bit was on the segments HKG TYO HNL SFO JFK LHR, was that the three filghts were not spread out evenly during the week, but operated on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Depending on which day we departed HKG, this meant having either one day or five days in TYO, or HNL, or SFO, before a one day slip in JFK, before operating the daylight Monarch service to LHR, complete with gold plated cutlery, with similar individual coffee and tea pots! Great!

ON El Al the cabin crew ....
TLV - YYZ then rests between 24 - 48 hours, then does YYZ - LAX - YYZ on the same day, then rest for 24 - 48 hours, and then flies the last leg YYZ- TLV.
It usually takes about six/seven days.

I once did TLV - AMS (rested two days) AMS - NYC (rested a day) NYC - ORD (rested two days) ORD - TLV.


TLV - CDG (rested two days)
CDG- OVD - CDG (Ovda, next to elat) rested a day.

It used to be the same when EL AL flew to BKK and HKG via BOM.
There used to be TLV - BOM (layover) BOM - HKG (layover) HkG - BKK (layover) BKK - BOM (layover) BOM - TLV

Wow, thankyou Amirs and everyone else for sharing the information. I could imagine that Qantas has those crew because LHR is their main international routes. Does anybody know operations for carriers such as JL? I heard that 8 hrs is the deadline for having two sets of pilots or not. So it was interesting because on JL18 from NRT-YVR, there were only one sets of cockpit crews but on the reverse, there were two cockpit crews. I wonder if they fly in the previous day as pax and then fly back?

Yeah Kdonohue, that is indeed easy to believe. But then, the thing is, why did they change the CX828/829 stop from YVR to ANC? There is also a cargo plane that flies in from LAX but I heard that the catering is not specifically Cathay. Its more like the AC Catering service. But with 888 coming in and 838 also coming in, it could indeed be true that some of their crew is based in YVR.

This is an interesting question which I would like more explanation. You have to note that JL on this route operate basically with Japanese-Brazilian crew.

JL a/c lies iddle in GRU for about 18h (arrives 7h and only departs next day 0h55), could it be that the pilot and crew on the arrival flight is the same of the departure flight?

BTW, JL flight NRT-JFK-GRU and RG flight GIG-GRU-LAX-NRT are the two longest flights in the world, correct?

Yes, CX has a crew base in YVR, and they basically operate all the HKG-YVR and YVR-JFK flights, but of course, HK based crew also does some of these flights. YVR base is growing too, and I generally like the YVR crews that the HKG based crews. The YYZ flights have reverted back to Anchorage stopover, but there will be a crew change in ANC for both the pilots and F/As, on both inbound and outbound flights.
