Nagoya/Chubu Int'l Opens Within A Month, Updates?

With the opening date of the new Nagoya/Chubu Centrair International Airport, February 17, approaching, I noticed it has a new website (For now, only in Japanese): http://new.centrair.jp/index.html . This new website has a lot more details than the old one, with a map of the terminal, destination lists, connection guides, concession listings, etc. The pictures of the terminal from what's on the website, look very nice. I hope they'll have more things in the secure areas for transit passengers instead of having everything in the terminal like KIX. I'm pretty sure a new English website will be up soon. The current English website hasn't really been updated since the summer, with the exception of the construction pictures which were updated every month or two.

If anybody out there have any news or updates on the airport with more details coming up as it nears opening, I'd appreciate that as well.

BH346 I don't know if this will be any use but I read that AC from YVR will go daily in some of the summer months from its 5x weekly operation to Komaki. Also, I think SFO and so are the new routes that are starting up. I also read an NH add about two weeks ago somewhere in HND talking about starting up new routes into the new NGO both for the domestic/international hub and they wanted it to become like a mini-hub. That's as far as I am concerned.

wow...i just checked the site out. can't wait for the english version to come up...though luckily i still remember some of my japanese and i was able to navigate a bit through it. all in all...not to shabby of an airport.

does anyone know if Japan is gonna dedicate a yen coin to the new Nagoya airport like they did for when KIX opened on the 500 yen coin?

I don't think they will. They will have a dedicated coin to the World Expo which starts in March in Nagoya.

The numbers for the international routes are pretty much the same now. Starting in March it all changes with AA and UA coming in.

Here are the routes from Chubu, airlines that will fly them and the frequency per week.

That's 278 international flights a week at opening! After UA and AA show up then it will be 292.

Finnair, Austrian and Vietnam are still looking at possibly adding Nagoya to their systems.

What will make this airport a BIG advantage over any other Japanese airport is if there are also loads of domestic flght connection. NRT and KIX are horrible due to the lack of domestic connections.

I see listed is SYD by AO. What airline is AO?

AO is Australian Airlines. A subsidary of Qantas I believe. It is their LLC. Flies to tourist destinations in an all coach configuration.

There are 94 domestic flights a day from Chubu. Around 658 flights a week!

Another great advantage to this airport is the advanced freight area. Many companies want to divert their freight to Chubu as it will be cheaper for the customer and packages can be deliverd 24 hours a day.

Is it likely that JAL and ANA will make some drastic changes to their domestic scheduling in and out of Nagoya to connect to international flights, especially in the spring and the summer? I notice that the domestic schedules for March do not seem to have changed much from the scheduling into Komaki, except for some markets.

Cospn: Chubu's code will be NGO. I'm not sure what Komaki's will be. Air service to Komaki will be restricted to regional aircraft (50 seats or less I believe). Komaki will be served by J-Air. I'm not sure if ANA Connection will serve Komaki (through IBEX or NAL). Komaki is being marketed as an airport for bizjets and general aviation use after Chubu opens.

Komaki will become a municipal airport operated by Nagoya City and Aichi Prefecture. Slight waste though. The International terminal was built in 1996. The Domestic terminal is not so nice in my opinion. I hope they tear down the domestic and just leave the international for charters or something.

Komaki is 20 minutes by car to the downtown. Its is 20 min by train from Chubu to the downtown. This makes it ideal for business jets. Fly into Komaki walk to your car and downtown in 20.

It is one of the few places where you can watch a 777 take off followed by a Piper.

The huge advantage to Chubu is that you can fly in from another country and connect without changing buildings or airports. It has a longer runway and can take flights 24 hours a day. It is also cheaper than KIX or NRT to land at.

If you go to Chubu to take photos, see if you can get out in a boat. Great location for photos and I hear fantastic fishing too!

Is that True?? Heard it was Going to cost more to Operate into than Kotami how can they charge less than KIX or NRT ???

I wouldn't imagine it costs that much to fly into Komaki. I think it's been around for a while unlike Kansai and Narita (relatively). Kansai and Narita are expensive due to the cost of land reclamation in the sea and purchasing land, respectively. So if Komaki's fairly inexpensive to operate out of, then being more expensive than Komaki wouldn't be a big deal. It will be quite cheaper to use Chubu than Narita and Kansai. Like Kansai, Chubu is built on an artificial island, but this time around they learned from Kansai's mistakes and improved on land reclamation techniques and cost cutting. For one, the underwater soil Chubu is built on is much more stable than the underwater soil layers under Kansai which means that Chubu won't have nearly as many problems with the island settlement (or sinking) as Kansai. One amazing thing about Chubu is that it's actually underbudget, which compared to other Japanese civil works project (ie KIX), is a feat in itself.

Another huge factor is that they didn't make the island square. There are few hard angles on the island. By making it round it sits better in nature.

In an agreement with local fishermen, they also planted seaweed and other native plants into the bed around the island. This prevents erosion and actually made the fishing better!

Chubu has an ISO 14001 rating which is a first attempt among airports throughout the world.

Chubu's construction is managed by Toyota Management Group. The leader was a former Toyota president.

Cost of construction came in about 6 billion yen under budget! Rare in the Japanese public construction world. But that makes it so that they are closer to making profit. The goal is to be profitable in 5~6 years. Ambitious!!!
