There has recently been some talk about CX returning A346 to CX100/101 HKG-SYD-HKG for the southern hemisphere winter schedule. However the Cathay website lists A343 for that service. Have there been any last minute changes, or could this perhaps be the direct result of VS introducing their LHR-HKG-SYD service on A346 ?

The first and second A340-600 are now deployed on HKG-JFK-HKG, with the third is being deployed to other places like YVR, KIX. During southern hemisphere winter schedule, it was planned CX100/CX101 will revert back to A340-600, maybe its just not on the schedule yet?

That means no more CX 346 at SYD ! I was to fly the bird in May and my ticket itinerary shows likewise (346). When I checked the web site in December it still showed 346 but has now reverted to 343. Too bad, I was looking forward to it.

Yeah, indeed that was the price. We've gone from 1 x 744 to 1 x 744 and 1 x 343 to 1 x 744 and 1 x 333.
And then gone to 2 x 333, now 3 x 333 (with an occasional 34C).
There was a 744 here a week or so ago.
It seems like SYD is one of CX's most important markets and they send capacity down here in response to demand (particularly in the Southern Hemisphere summer).
CX had no choice because I don't think they have many spare 744's and QF's increase in capacity with their QF29/30 has made CX's 3rd daily flight to SYD pretty much a necessity. Add VS's entry into the market and CX's presence in the market is perceived to be diminishing a little, hence the entry of the 3rd daily flight.

If that happens, look out for a price war. There is way too much capacity on the route if they enter it. 6 daily flights to HKG (1 x 744 and 1 x744/1 x 333 (QF dependent on QF29/30), 3 x 333 (CX), 1 x 346 (VS)). There was a time when we had 3 (albeit on 3 x 744's), then 4 (3 x 744 and 1 x 343). This is ridiculous. I can't see QF or CX being dislodged. VS is a LHR carry-over. The only way for KA to enter is to drop fares. And all the premium pax will go QF or CX (equal) then VS then KA in order of preference. Chances are not good.
