What Does Olympic Do With Its 4 A340s?

Hello,

I did a quick search in the forum and found a thread a while back discussing Olympic's A340's, and a conclusion was reached that Olympic have been planning to sell 2 of them for some time, but have not yet found a buyer. They originally brought 4 A340's to replace their aging 747's and they were used on their regular Athens - Sydney service. However this has now been scrapped.
Does anyone know what Olympic now does with its 4 A340's, as they only have sufficient routes to keep 2 of them occupied, operating to the following destinations:

- New York JFK
- Montreal and Toronto
- Johannesburg
- Occasional Heathrow

Do Olympic rotate all of the aircraft around? Why dont they just store 2 of them? Are they operating charter flights anywhere?

I would be grateful if anyone could shed some more light on the situation.

...and even JNB was downgraded to A300 for a few weeks in fall (with fuelstop in NBO) but is back to A340 now, I think.

Actually it is not very clear if 1 of 4 is grounded by the owner (bank).
Another one is inside OA hangar at Athens since saturday for D-check. that means 1 month grounded.

They use them as you say for New York, Canada routes, Jo'burg twice per week, Fridays and sandays for Heathrow and sometimes Paris.

Also during pic perios such Easter and X-mas on route Athens - Larnaca. the last route is very busy. or i.e. last X-mas we had 2 flights X OA A340 and 3 X Cyprus A330!!!

thanks for the info Elliot. Its a strange scenario then; i guess they just have a lot of spare capacity, and plenty of time for fleet maintenance! It cant be cost effective for them at all though!

I never understood the logic in scrapping the Australia route. There is a huge Greek community in Sydney and Melbourne and Olympic had the aircraft available. It would have been better to have the 340 earning its keep than stored or under-utilised.

I was sad too to see OA quitting from Australia, we are down to two airlines (BA and NG) flying direct from Europe at the moment. Guess OA couldn´t sell enough high yield tickets to make the route profitable.

yea we do seem to be lacking european carriers operating to Australia; although there is Virgin now too! I wonder why this is such a neglected market? most reasonably priced tickets for sale these days seem to be on far-eastern carriers. Do you know where the OAL A340 used to go via?

Oh sorry sorry sorry, forgot mr Branson! So three European carriers to Australia, which is still sad. But then again it´s easier to codeshare from halfway-point than keep crews in hotels all over the world.

Yes it is very sad, especially as the huge might of Lufthansa does not operate there anymore! There last flight i guess was 1993 - 94 time. i wonder which airline they use for their connections now?

i think it is a good point though now we have strong global alliances there is far less need for such long stop over routes. Maybe longer range aircraft will change that however in the future.

I never understood which motivation OA has to do longhaul operations except political ones. It just doesn't make any sense, Greece simply does not have enough intercontinental traffic, especially premium traffic, maybe with the exception of JFK.

They should just concentrate on a 737-fleet for european routes and, of course, the domestic service, especially to the islands, using 737s and turboprops. There is a lot of european travel from tourists, business people and greek people on private trips.

yeah i partly agree, although i guess they must have sufficient loads on their flagship London Heathrow service considering it is operated on an A300-600, and sometimes substituted with one of the 340's. One visited this Sunday.
