With the 2008 Chinese Olympics coming, you would have expected some chinese airlines to have ordered the A380 early, rather then now. In order to guarantee delivery spots in time for the olympics.

is it possible they will use it for the AMS route? it seems that China Southern is very happy with AMS since they are adding more flights each year, and with the KLM codeshare. Is it maybe that they will fly European customers to the Olympics via AMS with the A380?

That would be very nice indeed, MauriceB. I think the jump from a 777-200ER to an A380 is too much. But like you said, they have codeshares with KLM and the other Sky Team alliance members, so who knows...

Well done Airbus and CZ. So nearly 160 before first flight and EK is now only 27% of the order book. Looks more like the 380 and 7E7 will both be successful?

I don't think a 2 week event like the Olympics were the primary reason for buying these planes. So now that this is pretty much confirmed, CX is surrounded by A380 operators (CZ, SQ, MH, TG, KE) , a lot of them will likely be operating their A380's into HKG. Not to mention all the other A380 operators. I wonder how far is an order from CX.

With or without the Olympics, China's Big 3 airlines can easily fill these planes by 2008 considering their growth rate. Even today I believe there are many routes they can deploy such an aircraft on.
Ditto I do not agree that the reason airlines from China are buying the A380 is because of the Olympics. I suspect the Olympics may not even have anything to do with the decisions.

I am surprised it's China Southern that orders 5 A 380s and not Air China.

I am quite surprised that CZ ordered the A380-800 first before CA. This in light of the fact that CA would get a lot more O & D traffic to PEK (the capital of China) and PVG (the business center of China), which would necessitate the use of the A388 sooner or later.

why there are so many linking a380 to the olympics? You can't convince a country to make big a$$ purchase just for a 15-day event?
