Emirates airline expects to outdo record profits

"DUBAI : Dubai's Emirates airline expects to exceed last year's record profits of 476 million dollars in the financial year ending March 31, its executive president said.

"Despite the fuel issue, despite more recently the tsunami effect, Emirates is going to do better this year than it did last year," Tim Clark told reporters. "

This is just astounding to me! Kudos to EK! Being that I am human though, I do have to wonder if this bubble is ever going to burst. Not neccesarily by something the company itself might do, but maybe just by the future state of the world economy. 9/11, SARS, etc. all come to mind. I wish them the best and would love nothing more then seeing a picture of 13 or so A380's in Emirates' livery, lined up in a row at the gates in Dubai. I hope everything pans out!

well.....given their location, I think it fits into their philosophy of being the new "superhub" to all destinations...also, since they are allowing foreigners to purchase private property, I think they are one of the first, if not the first Arab country to understand and use their location to their advantage.....they seemed to be much more advanced than the other Arab countries.....

also, they import LOTS of cheap, blue collar work from Pakistan and India (mostly Pakistan).......so they are very competitive on that end.........

That being said, I also agree with you about the whole "bubble" and "implosion" thing..

PanAm never had a major hub operation with endless feed, and PanAm did not have Dubai as a base, which is growing like no other city in the world.

Dubai will reach capacity and operational limits, It is geographically good for some flights but, others require huge back tracking. Eventually they will add additional "Focus cities" We will see what happens over time.

Wrong. Pan Am never had a large domestic network in the U.S., so they did never get a feed comparable to EK's. Their "hubs" mainly consisted of long haul flights plus a limited number of medium haul flights.


Pan Am in the 60's was the equivilant of Emirates.

Pan Am never had the financial backing similar to EK's...and as I already said: PA did not have a base like Dubai which is one of the fastest growing and most exclusive destination in the world. Plus EK already have a reputation of being a luxury carrier - PA were quite the same as many other airlines of its time.


Unfortunately, the larger it grows the more interesting the challanges

The larger Emirates grow, the more dangerous they are for their competitors. Just look at Air France's Cyril Spinetta who is already complaining about "unfair" competition. EK are a nightmare for almost any carrier flying face to face with them.

No they won't. With 43 passenger A380 on order, a new airport on the drawing board and a growing network EK won't face these problems.


It is geographically good for some flights but, others require huge back tracking.

"Good for some flights"? DXB has a PERFECT location in the middle between Europe and Asia. Huge markets such as India just next door. And DXB is also perfect for transfers between Africa and Asia, or Europe and Australia. EK is a threat to any Asian, European and Australian carrier, plus to some African carriers, and even American carriers (e.g. for traffic between U.S. and India which is a growing market).
And don't forget their perfect hub airport at DXB - one of the most convenient airports in the world. New terminals to open soon. PA could only dream of such an infrastructure.


Eventually they will add additional "Focus cities" We will see what happens over time.

Unlikely. DXB will remain their one and only base. And instead of building "focus cities" they just increase frequencies or capacity to existing destinations in order to strengthen their hub.

The comparison with Pan Am is complete rubbish. Pan Am only ever had one focus city - Frankfurt. At US airports, there wasn't a single domestic connection, you had to change terminals, change airlines, change tickets at JFK or LAX or wherever. Ask any American who flew longhaul from their hometown in the 60s or 70s, and they'll tell you that they changed airlines at JFK. No wonder Pan Am went bust.

I'll venture to say that there's been no other airline in aviation history quite like Emirates. Though they received substantial government support when they were first founded (as a reaction to Gulf Air 'ignoring' the Dubai market) they've really come into their own in the last five years. I've enjoyed watching their growth.

A few questions:
EK have usually been very good about posting their upcoming service destinations on their website. Lately they seem to have slacked off - can anyone guess where they're going next?

Also, (and forgive me if this has been discussed before) what will be the main focus of the new Jebel Ali airport? It seems close to Dubai city, but at the same time I know there's a huge terminal expansion underway at DXB. Will Jebel Ali be handling only cargo flights (sort of like London Manston) or is the eventual plan to move EK and the other airlines there?

Actually this is not entirely accurate. PA merged with National Airlines after American deregulation and acquired and operated National's domestic route system for the last ten + years of its history.

Singapore is another small city-state with a very large airline: Singapore Airlines.
SQ didn't quite grow as quickly as EK but look at its fleet now.
The biggest 777 operator and one of the biggest 747 operators too.

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific fits this profile as well.

Kudos for EK to continue churning out big profits.

Even the Mafia's accountancy is clearer than Emirates accounts.
EK is nothing else than another puppet of the Emirati Gvmt and enjoys endless financial bakings from it. Very easy in that case to order new planes and open new lines every week, when you don't have to make them profitable to be able to survive !

EK has total monopoly at DXB where it pays no taxes and no one mentally safe would believe that they pay their fuel at $45 the barrel !

Additionally, the threat from Islamist groups and their sympathizers is not insignificant and must be factored in. The "Dubai Disneyworld" is hardly consistent with their worldview or vision for the Arabian Peninsula. IMO, Dubai is as poignant a potential target to the Islamists as was the World Trade Center.
