Is it possible to spot - but not photograph - in the terminal at IST? I realise the airport is heavily guarded. I believe that there is a beach location from where it is possible to view, even photograph, the movements with some degree of decency. Any input appreciated.

hey, yes there is an old road that leads to the beach just near the tip of 36R, however i cant really explain how to get there effectively.
If the airport is using 36 operations, an AMAZING place to watch planes literally touchdown 250 meters infront of you, is a mall called FLyinn. Go there, go to the top floor, and there is a viewing area with learge unobstructed windows, right next to the movie theatre and burger king

Is it possible to view the movements both landside and airside within the terminal? If so, could you guide me as to the better locations?
What would be the best way tto reach FLYinn? Will that location ALWAYS be good for watching the movements? Can you see the terminals and parked aircraft, etc., as well as the aircraft touching down?

Airside spotting possibilities are great. I was at IST in the beginning of October and could follow from airside almost everything. However, I´m not sure if the Turkish police like spotting as part of the terminal faces a military airport (I therefore only used my binoculars not facing the military apron)

I've taken photos from inside the terminal (with caution) and also from FlyInn without problems. The beach is always an option too, but I find the aircraft a bit too high. FlyInn is the best for action shots and great backgrounds too.

I too have taken photographs from the beach and from within the terminals the few times I have gone thru there.
I even had one guard ask me if he could view my binoculars. I thought I was going to be busted.

I took a couple of photos from inside the International terminal just after we landed. No problems. However, a large part of that terminal faces away from the runway IIRC. Certainly when we came back, there was little opportunity to take decent photos from the gate (not to mention the gate area was severely overcrowded).
The domestic terminal faces all directions but I'm not sure where that is relative to the runway(s).

hey, to reach flyinn, you leave the airport and make a right turn on the main road, and it will curve around the 36R area and then parallel 36L. Keep going for another 1 km after you cross 36L and u will reach a small traffic light, make a left turn at this point and flyinn is the large building on the left. There is underground parking avaiable, for free.
From IST this position you can see some great ramp action as well as touchdowns etc, although if you are going now, unfortunately the prevailing winds are southerly due to the Lodos weather pattern, so i hope you get some action.
Don't worry about the police, they will stare, if they approach you, as soon as you speak english they will lighten up and tell them you work for an international aviation newspaper...they will let you alone..... Just don't aim your camera at the guard posts on the airport perimeter. The colocation of the airbase isnt as security anal anymore, it's been downgraded, and now there is an aviation museum there too, you can see it on the right as you drive towards the 36R place. The museum has a lot of old a/c and an istanbul airlines Caravelle.
Anything else ya need like a map or something lemme know ill see if i can point things out on it.

It is not completely true that the int'l terminal. after you pass passport control
if you are lucky you can see the smaller runway and planes landing (But it is very rare)
Also if you move around gate 301 (turn right and go on walking) it is very clearly seen the longer runway (the busiest one).
you can take photos no problem.
FlyInn is a shopping center. There is no closer hotel but is is known area. You can go easily

IST has an airport hotel, and not far from the airport there are some (luxury) hotels in the area called Bakirköy, including Pinar Hotel and Holiday Inn.
I usually always ask a security guard whether taking photos is allowed, and most of the times get an approving nod and a friendly smile back.
One of the cafetarias on the top level of the departure hall also offers an overview on 18-36. It has dark blue windows though.

Thanks. I have done some research on fares from IST-ANK-IST and it looks like it will cost me more than LHR-IST-LHR! I can get LHR-IST-LHR for £159 in June/July including tax, but IST-ANK-IST looks like £177!
Have you ever been to ANK? Can you see much within the terminal, both airside and landside?

177 pound?? there might be a mistake. there are some different fares according with the times and days. I am sure you can find around 90$.
at the moment ankara esenboða airport is under restoration. The company built istanbul airport is making the restoration. At the moment the Ankara airport is not so good but after the construction it will be one of the modern and new airports of europe..
