Ryanair, Europe’s No. 1 low fares airline today (31st Jan 2005) announced the expansion of its Rome base to five aircraft and the launch of 10 daily domestic flights in Italy from Rome to Alghero, Venice and Verona, as well as 2 daily flights to/from Dublin with fares from just €4.99 - a fraction of Alitalia’s high fares.

Announcing the new routes in Rome today, Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary said:

This is a great strategic move by Ryanair, one long overdue. I've waited and forecasted this for about 12 months. Once the spat with Bergamo is tidied up, we will see x10 daily flights to CIA from Milano within 12 months.

I presume they mean Verona and Venice secondary airports?

Its a great move, as Italian domestic fares are really high, and it also means they will slow capacity in the bloodbath markets in the UK, Ireland and Germany.

how is Air One doing? You don't hear much about them outside Italy, but are they in a healthy position? Are they placing themselves as low cost? Can an Italian member give a discription of the current domestic Italian low cost market, strong and weak players and future challenges?

I guess we will, sometime in the future, also see CIA-GOA, CIA-TRN, CIA-PMO (if the 'problems' there are overcome), CIA-BGY, etc. I wonder whether there would be sufficient demand for a CIA-TRS and CIA-BDS service.

If it didn't have a 'problem' with BGY, I would expect services from BGY to CIA, BGY to PMO and BGY to AHO. Would there be sufficient demand for BGY-PSR, BGY-PSR and BGY-BRI? I am not too sure about the last lot.

By the way, Verona will be Brescia and Venice will be Treviso. From experience, it takes just under 40 minutes from Treviso to central Venice at a cost less than VCE to central Venice.

I think they could make PMO, BDS, BRI, TRS, GOA and TRN work from CIA and AHO, PMO, PSR, BRI, BDS from BGY. I am not too sure whether they could make BGY-CIA work.

Air One (AP) now is the 2nd national italian carrier after Alitalia (AZ).They operate in Italy as LH partner (so when you fly AP you can collect Miles&More) ; they're flying only on Italian domestic routes (except for Rome FCO - Nice , the only one international) mainly through 3 bases :
- Rome (FCO)
- Milan (LIN)
- Turin (TRN)

They've a quite large and spread network through Italy (from N to S from E to W).
These are cities linked by AP :
Rome (FCO)
Milan (LIN)
Turin (TRN)
Genoa (GOA)
Naples (NAP)
Milan (MXP)
Venice (VCE)
Trieste (TRS)
Albenga (ALL)
Cuneo (CUF)
Pisa (PSA)

Unfortunately there aren't any LCC (really LC) on domestic italian network , and AP has the same fares like Alitalia , Meridiana.....
Probably the only one (quite lowcost) is Windjet with routes only from Sicily to central and northern Italy.
By the way AP is doing very well in Italy and here they've a quite large piece of the domestic market.

With the high fares AZ charge for domestic flying in Italy, expect FR to be a runaway success on these markets. Trieste will be another success. The only downside are the operating restrictions at CIA and BGY which restrict departures per hour. I understand that BGY is operating at close to capacity in the early mornings already.

Ryanair suits anyone who wants to get from point A to B quickly and for a relatively low cost. That is a large portion of any country i'm pretty sure  Smile

And what about the 10 million people who will fly FR this year on their Italian routes? The same thing can be said for the swiss - and look at EasyJets performance from Geneva...

It's not just the 'flying shellsuits' who fly FR, unlike on charter airlines, of course. Don't you, Mr Onion, umm, Orion, fly charter airlines? You will find that businesspeople fly FR from DUB to the major cities in the UK, like LON, BHX and MAN, and vice-versa, and on routes where there is no competition.

If Italians have "style and finesse," why do they eat pizza with their hands? Not very stylish, eh?

Wind who?????  Smile/happy/getting dizzy will be Ryanairs attitude. Once Ryanair starts eating Windjets domestic italian route growth opportunities (which they have just started doing), and then picks off a route or two, Windjet will follow Volare and Ciao Fly on the road to nowhere! They dont have the scale or costbase to play Ryanairs game!

Just like someone's comment re. Florida residents being style-conscious so would not fly Southwest because it is effectively 'cheap and nasty.' What a load of dog's excrement! That statement might apply to an extremely tiny percentage of the population of that state, whereas if an average Florida resident (read: 99% of the residents) can get a fare for $39 instead of the next cheapest $200, then they will very quickly go for the cheapest deal. Really isn't a difficult concept.

Then they're not flying the charter airlines for business reasons.  Laugh out loud Come on, Kirkie, you're slowing! lol

Being Italian is much more than just fashionable clothes (for those who care about such things) and fancy restaurants. It's a way of life.

Back to the topic - I am sure FR will be quite successful on these new domestic routes. Whether people other than tourists will be willing to take the 1h+ bus ride to Treviso remains to be seen, but given the amount of tourists that Venice and Rome get year-round, this should not be an issue.
I for one might take them a couple times - we've been missing a true low-cost alternative to caput mundi - but FR are not my favorite way to travel.
