Thank god for TCAS.

Do you think the AI pilot had visual of the Sukhoi. If he had, he would most certainly have had a heart failure....

The Sukhois were below the a310 huh? Below and in front, how did the AI pilot see it?
I know an assigned height is an assigned height and the IAF pilot should have stuck to it........ But he had constant visual. There was no ‘real danger’ if you know what I mean. What good did the TCAS do, none! Not like the airbus had to (or could) get out of an SU-31's way.
Would have been a neat sight........ If it was during the day  Smile

Is that IAF pilot dumb or something????

400 feet!!!...phew....that's dangerous if you've got passengers on board.

"We were in visual contact with this aircraft..." - now isn't that a stupid explanation?

Not a good enough explanation. If true, the IAF pilot surely erred and had no business being so close to a commercial jetliner even if he had visual contact. Also please note that only the AI plane had TACAS (which incidentally is also good enough). And yes the TACAS can provide an advisory well in time for an Airbus to get out of a fighter's way because there is no way the SU30s would have been going supersonic at that time. Even if it were, the TCAS would give advisories accordingly to avoid that traffic.

Also it must have been daylight if they were going back after R-day rehearsals whereby the fly past was scheduled at 1135-1140 every day.

Our armed forces seem to be going through a bad patch. Accusations all round - in the air and on the ground in a whole lot of issues.

There were 2 sukhois the A310 capt got a CLIMB CLIMB on Tcas disconnected the autopilot and started heading for the sky when the other sukhoi got into the picture then he got a DESCEND DESCEND and shoved the nose forward. Hell when you got people walking around the cabin you can expect major injuries .Thank god no one got hurt

Hello all,

I guess that Air Force pilots have similiar behaviour all over the world...daredevils.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy It reminds me of all the good stories I heard about Czech and Czechoslovak AF days.

This should not happen, but it did and I supose that the pilot(s) will be disciplined.

Now regarding TCAS. I believed that only if both planes are equiped w/TCAS II, they will get CLIMB and DESCEND commands. Am i wrong?

BTW, A310 pilot was really p/o!

Cheers,
Andrej

TCAS and TACAS are the same thing right?

But yes Vimanav you're right. 400 is really close....
What I meant by "no real danger" I meant in terms of an imminent mid air collision.
It was dangerous and by all accounts the Sukhois shouldn’t have been there, but I meant that they were not flying thru clouds, it was 11.40am. I phrased it badly, apologies.

What type of traffic advisory system do Su's have????

Andrej,

Thats only the Pilot-ATC comms and he was pretty stern and not rude , Now if the whole CVR transcript is sent out that is going to be real fun , you would probably learn some very colourful language there ....  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Regards

IndianFlyboy,

I would love to read the whole CVR transcript. I am sure that we would read a lot of the colourful language!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

BTW, was there any action taken, or is this still under investigation?

Cheers,
Andrej
