As I left school today, I noticed a four-holer fly over on approach to EWR with bright red engines, and I immediately thought VS. It turned out to be one of SAS's A343's though, flight 909. I know SAS's A343's and the EWR route were discussed in the below thread, but is this the new equipment on SAS909, or was this just an equipment change for today?

BTW SAS903 was still flown today by an A333

I think they mix the planes used on all routes to US for the moment, as they are puting Internet connections on all there A343/A333. SK903 have also been flown with A343 some times during January.

Since the A340-300 and A330-300 are essentially the same in every respect except for the number of engines, do the 343s and 333s of SAS have the same seating configurations? (which would make the two types easily interchangeable on any route which the 333's range allows it to operate)

Any chance of SAS starting the Oslo-EWR route back up again?

Yes, they have the exact same seating configurations but the a343 have longer range.

There is actually a rumor going around that SK is looking at getting 757/767 to combat CO's entry on OSL-EWR and Finnair's planned route from HEL to BOS via Stockholm/Skavsta.

This was posted on a Norwegian forum, by a SK pilot who got this from the SK Pilot Union.

Reason:
Hard to find any suitable used A330/340s on the market.
Easy availability of 757/767s
SK has experience with operating the 767 and would have small problems getting accustomed with the 757s.

In addition SK is doing great business on the CPH-NRT route and would have loved to get another flight in there, however with slot restrictions that's impossible, so SK might get bigger equipement on the route, possibly a A340-600.

No pilot training issues. It would be all about engines and the like

Took the words out of my mouth...

Just counting SAS Mainline:
A340
A330
737NG (600/700/800)
A321
MD-82/83/87

SAS Commuter:
DHC8-Q400

And then there are the wholly owned subsidiaries:
Avro 85
SAAB 2000
SAAB 340
etc.....

There is nothing to challenge Finnair on. Finnair's summer HEL-STO-BOS route is operating for only three months on behalf of a tour company and is being operated by their holiday division. You can't even earn regular Finnair miles on the flight.

Starlionblue:

don't forget that SAS Braathens fly the 737-400 and -500 as well.

I love the fact that SAS fly so many different types, and I don't think that their financial problems are only caused by this. Remember that SAS and Braathens have excellent MX experience with several aircraft and engine types and can thus offer great MX deals for other airlines, which they have done for many years already - and that brings in a lot of money, I'm sure.

I think management and organisational costs are some of the culprits for SAS. Many LCC's keep their mgt costs to a minimum, and that helps a lot.

First sell all the 767 and reject the 757 in favor for A321 and then buy/lease 767 AND 757. I really hope that SAS has more common sense than that. It would be great to see a 757 in SAS colors, but I don't think this nor the 767 returning will happen.

If they want to fly to North Amercia from OSL again they should introduce the A319LR to their fleet. AF flies their A319LR with 28 business and 54 economy. If SAS replaces to 2 rows in business with 3 in economy they could make it work from OSL to EWR and OSL-ORD. I have doubts than anything bigger like a 767 can be operated profitable by SAS from Oslo.

Regarding their CPH-NRT and an possible upgrade to 346 I would vote in favor of added frequencies and destinations. Finnair gets a lot of its Asian passengers from Norway and Sweden due to Copenhagen's unfavorable geographical location for flights to Asia. So if SAS needs more seets to NRT, they should open up a flight ARN-NRT. If they can't get slots, why not trying a 2nd destination in Japan like KIX or NGO to ease pressure on it's NRT flight.

Using B767 is no problem for OSLO. SAS operated their EWR service for a long time and this worked very nice. After 9.11 the number of passengers dropped, and SAS introduced their even larger A340 on the route. This turned out to be to big for a daily service to EWR.
SAS no longer has any B767 in their fleet.

CO operates OSLO-EWR nonstop by B757-200 and is doing well on this route. However today it was confirmed that SAS is seriously thinking of relaunching OSLO-EWR again, but not certain what aircraft they are looking for. So this will be a battle. Using 1 B757 has turned out nice, but if SAS relaunches their service the numbers of seats on this route will actually be even larger than before when SAS used their A340....so I guess this is a bad thing!
