What Happens To FE's ?

What happens to all those flight engineers, when the type they fly on gets replaced by a two pilot type (like DC-10 --> A-330 for example)? I mean with airlines outside of the US that, have dedicated flight engineers?
Are they suddenly unemployed?

The major airlines only hire flight engineers with pilot liscences. They are moved up to the right seat on the smallest aircraft in the fleet. If an airline employs proffessional engineers then they are let go, or moved to another type of aircraft as engineer. The plane they give up has to go somewhere so the engineer has a chance of going with it.
