Good Morning All,
I will be flying MDT-ORD-SEA in June on United. The ORD-SEA leg will be on a 777. Just wondering what to expect in the way of IFE? I will be traveling with my 8 yr old son, and I'm sure you can understand the importance of keeping him entertained for four hours!
Also, we'll be returning on a UA 757-200. Same question as above.

Since the 777 you are atking continues on to NRT,it will have PTV's for all. Also,channel 9 may be available to listen to ATC.

Same question from me - but slightly extended: How is the IFE on 747s, 777s 767s, 752s on transatlantic flights and flights to Hawaii. I must make my mind up whether to avoid the 747 transatlantic and the 752 to Hawaii.

Most if not all plane in the United fleet, including Ted, have in-seat audio. And all planes equipped with video equipment for most flights will have some video entertainment. PTVs or not, United does offer the most IFE of any of the majors.
It isn't like American where the entire MD-80 fleet is IFEless, or Northwest which doesn't offer any IFE on domestic flights.

Actually for US carriers United is one of the best for offering IFE. The actual systems themselves are outdated, but all flights (with the exception of 737s and express) have at least overhead monitors. That is much better then having to pay like you do on some carriers like CO, or not having anything like at NW. So for domestic flights UA is the best.
The internationally equiped 777s and 3 class 767s have PTVs in all classes that typically have 4 movies showing and some short subject entertainment. It is all free, and you will have this feature on your ORD-SEA flight. On the 747s, 757s, domestic 767s, A320s, A319s, you do get overhead monitors playing a relatively new movie. Sometimes they are bad, but sometimes they are good movies and they are replaced every 15-30 days accross the entire fleet, so they shouldn't be old. If your son can see the screen above the aisle, then there will be some entertainment.
Also in business on international routes all seats have PTVs with 4 movie options and short subject. It is an outdated system and nothing like the newer available on demand systems, but I think it is adequate. In first class you get these features as well as a cassette player so you can select your own movie from a healthy selection.
Just because UA has an outdated system, doesn't mean that it is mostly nonexistant. Compare UA to NW and you will see a huge difference as the latter gave up on domestic IFE and even on planes equipped with it, they leave the system off.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I flew about a month ago on a UA 777 from SEA to DEN. There were PTV's for all, but because the flight was only around 2 hours they only activated channels 6-9 (general programming - no movies). The flight was a continuation of the Tokyo flight, and seemed to be staffed by an international crew. It was nice to take an internationally configured plane for such a short flight - I should mention that it was packed, with lots of Japanese skiing tourists.
Anyway, expect at least channels 6-10 on the video (general programming) and the airshow . Maybe since ORD - SEA is slightly longer you'll get the movies ...

Someone clearly hasn't checked their facts out and flown their West-Coast/ANC-HNL/OGG flights lately. Their 753s are A/V equipped, and do offer IFE.

If you are talking about their flights to the west coast, from the east, no there is no IFE. On Hawaii runs and international, there is.
UA is fine for IFE, just not all planes have PTVs. Still, UA are the only ones where you can listen to ATC

I flew the ORD - SEA on United's 777 a few months ago. From what I can recall each seat had PTV's and there is a pretty good selection of movies, music, and maybe even some tv shows. In addition, you can listen to channel 9, which allows you to hear the conversation between the pilots and Air Traffic Control. There is also the flight map so that you can see where you're located. It's a 4 and a half hour flight so the PTV's make the time go by fast. Expect the flight to be full. It seems like a lot of people chose that departure time simply to fly on the 777. I know I did.

The 777's that UA flies to Hawaii (generally) are domestically equipped and therefore do not have PTV's. I recently flew UA #1, ORD-HNL and experienced this for the near 9 hour flight, while there was a movie on the big screens throughout the cabin, there were no PTV's even where I was seated in F class.

Sorry about that mistake. Yeah I knew they had the IFE operational on the Hawaii flights. I forgot to put in lower 48 flights, which does make for almost all of their domestic travel. NW as well as almost all US carriers have some form of IFE on flights to Europe or Asia.

UA gave us noise cancelling headphones on a 777 flight from IAD to DEN, and there were video screens that gave you the choice of several movies and tv shows -- i watched ken burns' "jazz" which was excellent.
the coolest channel, though, was the one that allowed you to track the progress of the plane with gps. it gave you headwind speeds, eta's, and a whole lot of other stuff that plane nuts would love.

I would recommend bringing you own IFE for keeping your son entertained. Much of UA's IFE is geared towards adults. News, sit-coms, movies generally tend to be more adult-like (no, not adult themes like on Hooters Air ).

The 777 you will be flying on will have an individual PTV in every seat-back. It features 8 channels of video (no on-demand unfourtunatly ) and airshow, and of course audio programming.
I know the question wasn't really about the ife on those 2 planes.. but IFE is my passion and I seized the opportunity! lol.
But ya- for your 8 year old you might want something like a GameBoy or your own personal DVD player and play his favorite shows.
In the future you might want to try to book something on a Virgin Atlantic (VS) A340/A340-600 if it's good IFE that you're looking for. They feature special on-demand kids programming as well.

Actually, they offer Super Nintendo (remember that) games that are emulated (VS anyway). Brought back memories. Most airlines don't, however, have on demand games. V:pod and KrisFlyer are exceptions, rather than the rule. I would bring along a Gameboy if you need that for your boy. I know US offers kid specific programing on the A333, but no games

I wanted to thank everyone for their responses and suggestions. I know he would bring his Gameboy. That goes without saying. Being 8, he goes nowhere without it! But he does tire of playing it after a while, so I was just wondering what else was available. He is so excited about this trip. (me too!) I am hoping that he will be so fascinated by the flight and the 777 itself that he will be occupied with just that!
When I was 20, I flew BWI-MCI-OAK on World Airways DC-10-30. Because of the hop to MCI, there was no movie shown on either leg of the trip. I did get two meals though, so that consumed some time. But other than that, it was $2 rental headsets with a few channels of music or magazines.
Funny, the cost of that flight in 1984 was just $30 less than this MDT-ORD-SEA flight! The more things change..................

Actually I would say Continental has the most equiped out of the majors. 76-200/400, 777-200 have private T.V's on all of them in all cabins not just some like UA'S. The 73-700/800/900 and 75-200/300 all have flat screen drop down t.v.'s and some of the 73-300's have center monitor's. The only plane that has no IFE is the 73-500 and that's the last plane in the fleet. Continental also does not charge for IFE they charge for head set's and you are also welcome to bring your own.... Oh also there is all different types of music channels from hip hop to country.
