WSJ 02/10/05:
While the U.S. and European Union agree that their respective subsidies to Boeing Co. and Airbus should be eliminated, it will be difficult to come up with a way to do so, EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson said.
"I have no illusions about the difficulty of reaching an agreement," Mr. Mandelson told reporters before leaving for a meeting in Washington today with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick. "You have to reach an outcome that offers fair competition to Boeing and Airbus. That's hard."
....Mr. Mandelson said the EU will also urge Congress to comply with a World Trade Organization ruling that so-called U.S. Byrd Amendment antidumping rules should be eliminated.
...Mr. Mandelson said it is important to conclude the talks as quickly as possible because of the uncertainty that now hangs over both aircraft makers. "It's not fair to the companies concerned to continue [talks] indefinitely," he said.
