Spotting At YYZ After Recent Threat

I'll be out and about at YYZ this weekend.

Any recommended spotting areas here? How much does one get hassled at YYZ?

Due to the recent threat to shut-down communications at YYZ, do you think GTAA security will be on Red Alert, harassing everyone who stops for 30 seconds to take a pic?

Any info would be great.

Xiao!

the most popular place is Wendy's parking lot. It is near Terminal 3 and at the intersection of Airport Rd and Orlando Dr. There is another one called FedEx hill, never been there though.

Can't say about recent threats, but last summer I spent couple of hours out in the open with my camera and nobody turned up. Although couple of custom and immigration guys were having lunch at Wendy's. Came to know from one of the threads, that sometimes they do want to see your ID etc.

YYZ has become much more spotter friendly over the last 2 years. But you may be approached by the local authorities and have your ID checked out before being allowed to continue.
The Wendy's lot that Aseem referred to is a very popular location.
You might want to check out http://www.yyzspotter.com/spotyyz.htm for directions to some of the popular spots.
Have fun!

Cheers,
Kaz

Last time I was out with the YYZ crew one of the local PEEL officers was talking with a few of the guys for about half an hour. Apparently he is a lurker on this site, and an aviation enthusiast himself. So definately the authorities out there are pretty understanding as long as you follow the rules.

Last week the police had an area near the airport sealed off and the bomb disposal team was called in. A telephone switching box has been set on fire and the media said it was caused by an explosive device. There wasn't a lot of other information made public. It was the media that tried to link it to shutting down YYZ communications.

I was up in YYZ yesterday and had no problems. Took pics from the Sheraton and inside the gate area at T3. No problems whatsoever. If I would have had a car, would have gone over to Fedex.

Aseem check the link I posted above...
Fedex is located at the corner of Derry and Bramalea Roads.
Take Bramalea Road south of Derry until it ends.. you will see the hill on your right. Remember to park your car on the right side of the road.
If you're out tomorrow you can catch my arrival from SXM... should be a 763.

Cheers,
Kaz

A warning about FedEx. Bramalea does not get ploughed south of the FedEx entrances and you may need an SUV to make it down to the end. It's been fairly mild recently so maybe most of the snow has melted. I haven't been there lately.

Aseem,
I have taken a photo of the famous Fedex Hill of YYZ today. You can see the Cars Parked on the Right Side of the road (Bramlea Rd.) and the Fedex Area at the left. The Fedex Hill is at the Right side of the cars. The snow has melted considerably and is not as bad as it was during the previous weekends. No problems seen as mentioned in the title of this post.Usual crowds.

Santhosh,

Are you the same Santhosh that 'misplaced' his cell phone @ YYZ back in the Summer/Fall???

I rescued a cell phone, called the home # that was listed in it, and the guy came to pick it up, and I gave it to another local spotter who was going to wait around for the owner to pick it up!

The owners name was eerily similar to yours, if infact it wasn't you!

Thanks!

I took a day off to take this shot. Now after december, I think we don't have to be envious about that. In May, we can get a glimpse of the other neighbour.

Santhosh,

No problems my friend -- just helping out another friendly spotter!

If you ever are around YYZ, look for me.. i'm in the silver '04 Mazda6.

Glad you were able to get your phone back! I'd die without mine haha.
