I have read a report in Airliners World that SAS is getting rid of there MD-90-30 Fleet.
They are really nice to see at London Heathrow and soon they say be all gone.
SAS original order for six aircraft in 1992. But know they seem to want to get A320 A321 A319. Not running Airbus down or anything just saying it really nice to see the old planes at the Airport but know days they get rid of them. Oh well like age and people live moves on.

The fact that there's only 8 in the fleet, makes them an oddball in the fleet. The aircraft can't be operated by MD-80 crews without additional training, so this has left SAS with another pilot group for the MD-90s, since there's only 8 in the fleet, it isn't a profitable aircraft for SAS.
With new interest in the market for used MD-90s by Hello, Iran Air Tours etc. this is the right time for SAS to get rid of them.
As for the MD-80s, SAS has reduced their fleet steadily, a lot of examples have gone to Allegiant Air. Allegiant seems to very happy with the former SK models, and could get more in the future.
Personally, I think SAS have two options.
1. They keep their fleet as it is, maybe gradually getting rid of some of the older MD-80s, but in essence it remains as it is. A complete fleet rollover only takes place when either Airbus or Boeing comes up with a 737replacement or A320NG.
2. SK get rid of their NG's and MD's, and go for the A320 series. SK get rid of their A321s, and go for a complete NG fleet.
I also see a possibility for SK going for the Embraer 170/175/190/195 sometime in the future.

I don't think SK would totally get rid of the 737 fleet, which what I believe CEO@AFG is referring to, because they number fairly high, much more than the A321s.
Personally, from a spotter's point of view, SK's 736s and A321s are very nice A/C and look great on film, but of course, aesthetic beauty isn't everything in the airline industry . If they can't make money with the MD-90, or any other type, than they need to get rid of them...

The original MD-90 order came about because of the economic downturn after the first Gulf War.SAS had 18 remaining MD-80 orders and the cost of cancelling the order was so high that SAS converted them into 6 MD-90's.These were delivered in 1996-97.Two additional planes were ordered soon after.
Last year,SAS tried to get hold of 8 additional MD-90's,but they spent too much time in deciding whether to acquire them or not.In the meantime some other operator got hold of them and decided the matter for SAS.
The recent re-organization in SAS left the MD-90's with SAS Denmark iso. SAS Norway.The Danes have had a bad time trying to maintain the MD-90 but without success.Serviceability has dropped enormously and spare parts and support from Boeing is practically non-existent,hence the decision to withdraw the MD-90 from operations.Too bad! It is really a very nice plane.
A319 orders have not been placed yet,but there are 4 outstanding orders for A321's that MAY be converted into A319 orders with 2 deliveries in 2006 and 2 deliveries in 2007.At least those are the plans as of right now; 0957 UTC Sunday 13th feb. 2005!
