NW MSP-BOI - CRJ-200? Yuck...

Hello,

I just saw someone say on a post that NW is adding a 3rd flight on MSP-BOI, but it is on a CRJ-200. I checked it out, and wondered, what other flights are they doing this on? I guess there are worse out there, though. Isn't MSP-ELP a CRJ?

umm....dont complain. I flew a CO flight from TORONTO to HOUSTON on an ERJ. Ive never wished for a CRJ more in my life.

NW, especially in the last few years, has added some nasty long RJ routes -- MSP-JAX, MEM-TUS, etc.

On the other hand though, it's a lot better than having no service at all.

I wasn't complaining, rather than just questioning which cities have these looong RJ routes...but I agree, and like I said, there are probably much worse out there.

I've done YYZ-IAH several times recently on both AC Jazz CRJ's and COex ERJ's. Sked flight time is about 3:30 so you're on board for about 4 hrs. When you're 6-2 like me, that's a brutally long and tight flight. The CRJ was really no better than the ERJ.

Heaven help us if there is ever a CRJ-200ELR or an ERJ-145XXXXLLLLR. I will NOT fly YYZ-CCS on such a beast.  Smile




Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

Wanna talk about longhaul RJ flights, look at what DL did at DFW. Flights close to or over 1,000mi to cities like OAK, SNA, ONT, DTW, CHS, DCA, JFK, GSO, RDU and PBI! That was hard for pax, though at least most of these flights were on CR7s.

They're not so bad if you're lucky enough to have an exit row window seat with nobody in the aisle seat, like my last two CRJ flights. Actually, any window seat with a vacant aisle can be somewhat comfortable on this aircraft. Plan accordingly when you're checking in.

As far as the MSP-BOI CRJ, this isn't such a bad idea - it simply supplements the other two mainline flights, and gives customers additional flight options. Hopefully MSP-ELP will do well enough that the CRJ can be replaced by a '9 or a 319 - it's rough when the CRJ is the only option for a 3 hour flight.

Flew Portland-Phoenix on an America West CRJ900. The person sitting behind me complained that we need a real jet, not a toy. The flight was 2 hours 11 minutes.

I believe the MSP-BOI CRJ is just for a couple of Months until Summer then I think it goes to a A319 after that

Actually it goes to 3x A320s during the summer. It's 2x A319s now and 3x A320s, I don't know if that is what you mean, but that is how it usually is in a typical year.

I flew an NW CRJ-200 from MKE-BWI in December and thought it was not so bad. In fact I felt the seats were far more comfortable than the ones on their 744 economy seats (except for the CRJ lack of pitch). It is a little crowded and cramped but for 2 hours it isn't bad. Personally I thought it more comfortable than a NW DC9 or A320 for 2 hours.

It is definitely not a plane for leisure that is for sure. Not enough overhead for even winter Jackets. (Would have thought the Canadians would have figured that important). It is also not designed for the heavy body loads the U.S. has. I saw two overweight people squeeze into their seats with their fat in the aisle. For a short person...perfect plane. I felt tall!

Never flown on an Embraer? What are they like?

NW compared to the other legacy carriers has done the least amount of RJ'ing of former mainline routes. Look no further than United, AA, DL, and especially CO to how many routes in the past few years of downgauged to RJ's from former mainline flying. NW was late to the RJ game, but has primarily used their CRJ's to a) upgage turboprop flying in some markets b) open up new routes / markets and test the waters (SAV, AVL, SWF, AVP, RFD, ELP, CPR, etc, etc) and upgrading to mainline if the route warrents (DTW-SAV, MSP-JAX, etc), not to mention IND & MKE c) add additional frequencies to existing markets.

The CRJ's are not a bad aircraft on the shorter routes. Routes like DTW-ATW, DTW-SCE, they are great. I flew DTW-SAV, with over a 2 hour block time was pushing my tolerance of being on a full CRJ. If you get an open seat next to you they are great.

The only thing I like about the ERJ is if you can get an A seat (the single seat), or again, an empty seat next to you. I'm not clastrophobic, but for some reason I felt that the ERJ cabin was excessively cramped, seemed a lot less spacious than even like a Saab.

I fly MSP-BOI every few months. I doubt the CRJ will replace the A319/320 on that route, if so, it won’t be for very long. Although, the CRJ is a great plane, I’ll probably try and avoid the 2hr 45min flight from MSP to BOI.

NW has been adding and taking away the 3rd BOI-MSP flight ever since they started it.
It comes on during the usual busy times ( Christmas,Summer, and a couple weeks in Spring). Someone here (BOI) for NW mentioned that perhaps the CRJ will make the third flight year round so that pax will always have three options on NW, but just flip between mainline and Pinnacle jets. At least it is the 44 pax and not 50. Get that extra inch of room.

The other day, I was shocked to find that my CO flight from MCI to NWE (over 1000 miles) was aboard an ERJ. I had mixed feelings about it; the seats are were comfy, with plenty of leg room (I'm not that tall), they served a snack-lunch (not a function of the plane, of course), but on the left side of the plane, where there's only one seat, the hole under the seat in front is so tiny, I couldn't fit my modestly sized laptop bag under. Nor could I find room for my jacket in the overhead bin. And so I was way more cramped than I should have been, since it didn't seem like the actual seat dimensions were any smaller than that of larger planes. And then there was a really spooky takeoff, which I swear took the entire runway, followed by an incredibly sluggish climberate; which was made even more apparent by comparatively rocket-like T/O and climb of the 737 that took me the rest of the way to ORD. I chalked it up to the very full cabin and fuell tanks on the ERJ. Anyway, just my experience on a relatively long-haul ERJ flight.

I agree. While CO staff did a comenable job of serving us on the MCI to NWE leg, that little plane simple couldn't accommodate a full load of PAX for a nearly 3 hour flight comfortably.

I'm sure cities like ELP and BOI will be happy when you take over the airline and end all service to these cities because of your dislike of RJs.

I used to do MSPPHX on a CRJ900 when YV used to serve MSP, was a little long for an RJ.
