Flew them once from IAD to MCO on a 737-300. While the outside was the full red New York Air paint scheme, the interior was the brown leather Continental decor. It even had the "meatball" logo on the bulkhead. This was 1986.

i remember the PAA shuttle offerd Sam Adams in the bottle! I flew on NYA a few times and remember them fondly........the flying nosh and great flight attendants. I can recall wanting to fly for New York Air when i was flying with Pan Am!!!!!! go figure...................!!??

As a wee tyke I sent them a picture I had drawn of one of their DC-9's shortly after they started up and was invitied up to NY to tour the facilities. Met the then president, Neal Meehan,and poked around in a parked DC-9. A cool airline, shame to see them go.

I took them a couple of times when they existed between LGA-DCA. Yes, I remember the 'nosh bags' and the free beer too. NY Air forced a real upgrade in the service on the flights for then and future competitors until 9/11 ruined it.

I remember flying on New York Air from Islip to Cleveland with a connection in Washington Dulles. The flight attendants were very cute. Back in the 80's they probably got away with hiring by looks. Their morning bagel nosh was good. Their evening nosh was cheese, bread, fruit and candy. They included beer and wine. My first 737-300 flight was on NY Air. Out of Islip, it took off like a rocket. I remember their gates in IAD were decorated like a club room with nice seating with lamps. Too bad they are not still around.
I also took NY Air on my very first one-day spotting trip from Islip to IAD. Once in IAD, I took a bus to Washington DC and spotted there all day and took the bus back to IAD and flew back into Islip. Back then I knew my parents would have given me a hard to going on my own. I was only 18 and in school. But I went anyway without telling them. The fare was only $78 each way with no fees, so I could afford it. The flights were on DC-9-30's. The return flight was in fog and rain and the talk was we may be diverted to JFK. I was so worried that I could not get back to Islip and I would be in trouble with the parents. But luckily we made it in. I very memorable flight. I was a little buzzed from the free beer.

By the way, NY Air service was really something special by todays standards.
For Example: EWR MSY, I remember it very clearly.
After Takeoff: Mimosas or Bloody Marys, then a full comp. beverage service, morning breakfast snack. Large baskets of Rugulach offered to each pax, and then fresh fruit baskets. All done by hand (except the bev. service).

NY was a non-union entity set up by Frank Lorenzo of Texas Air. Many of our A/C came from CO via Texas International. Many CO employees were unhappy with the fact that Lorenzo was transferring CO resources to a non-union carrier. We were picketed at LGA, I did not understand the issues when I was hired, but it later became apparent.
NY started service as competition to the EA shuttle. First service to was LGA DCA, and then later LGA-BOS. Although we operated a "shuttle" schedule on the half hour, in contrast to EA on the hour, NY offered reservations, seat assignments, comp. drinks and a snack on those short flights. Man, it was tough, and you often got quite the work out.
Service was expanded and hubs were opened in RDU (well before AA) and then IAD and later EWR.
We served TPA, FLL, MCO, MIA, JAX, SAV, MSY, DTW, CLE, BDL, ISP, HPN and a number of other cities on the eastern seaboard.
When Texas Air Corp took over Eastern, Texas Air was forced by the US Government to divest itself of one of its LGA shuttles. The New York Air slots at LGA and DCA were sold to Pan Am and they started their own operation out of the Marine Air Terminal.
Most LGA operations were moved to EWR, were NY already had a similar shuttle operation. When PE was purchased by Texas Air, NY became irrelevant and was incorporated into CO. Remember though, NY was "company" PE was not.
When NY received it's 737-3TO's they were originally delivered in full NY colors, however, later deliveries were in full CO colors with a notice "owned and opererated by New York Air.

For a short while, NY had DC-9 service from BOS/NY to Nantucket Island. I believe on of the flight stopped in Martha's Vineyard. Would have loved to be on that short hop between the Vineyard and Nantucket!

I graduated high school in 1981 and as a graduation present my parents and I went to NYC for some shows, sight-seeing etc. I will never forget that trip. At it's peak what type of non-stop service was offered out of RDU? I have seen photos of some of the time table covers but can't seem to find any real details about cities served.
Also, was the NYAir service divided into first class and coach?

Oh how I miss Midway Airlines. A class act right to then end.

I remember the DC-9s had beige cloth seats. I have pictures I took of the DC-9 interior. I also remember the windows were so scratched that they looked like they had been cleaned with sandpaper. It was impossible to see out. In fact, I was so disappointed in not being able to see the approach into LGA that I took the Eastern Air-Shuttle on my return so I could enjoy the DCA approach down the river.

DTWCLIPPER: There are still some of the old NY AIR 73-3TO's flying around. I believe they are the ones with the lavs actually inside the galley.. Correct me if I am wrong but the standard is on the rest is the lavs are on the outside and the back wall is all the galley. There are still plenty of former NY AIR FA'S flying. One has been flying for 27 years now as a Flight Service Manager doing NTA and another is still domestic she was a 81 hire. I jumpseated with her to vegas very nice lady.... I told her I was born her year of hire and we got a good laugh out of it! Anyway just thought I would share that!

IIRC all of the 737-3TO's (the only variant CO currently operates) were originally ordered to NY standard, which included the two aft lavs at the pressure bulkhead and the galleys arranged facing aft just immediately forward of the 2L/R doors.
By the time the 737-500s were ordered, Continental had realized the inefficiency of this layout, especially during food service and preparation, and all future 737 deliveries came with the majority of the galley equipment mounted across the rear bulkhead, with lavatories on the opposite side.
I haven't been in a 733 coach lav in a while on CO, but I do remember them to be pretty spacious. I guess that was the advantage of this placement, along with the fact that the flights NY operated the 733 on featured only light meal service, with cold snack items that were easy to fit in a cart or two.
