So I was going through the Boeing production lists and happened to find two different Boeing customer codes assigned to Air China, the original "J6", and a newer "9L". I also checked the customer code assignment in several sources and found that both codes refer to Air China. Any info would be appreciated.

According to airlinecodes.co.uk, J6 was used for CAAC aircraft. AFAIK, CAAC was sort of the "Chinese Aeroflot" and its successors were entirely different companies, meaning that Boeing would slap entirely new codes on the planes going to those companies. That also applies to Air China which took over the 747-4J6M you found from CAAC - but a Boeing customer code never changes* once an airplane has been delivered, so the ex-CAAC jet remained a 747-4J6M.
* I know of those 707s way back in time...

Aloges-
That 747 was delivered directly to Air China in 2000, in fact all of the 747-400s were delivered directly to Air China, beginning with the first one B-2456 in 1989. CAAC broke apart in 1988 before the 744 was introduced in to the fleet. This is the precise reason that I posted the thread. Also, some 767-3J6s were delivered to Air China in the mid 1990s as well.
