I wonder how relevant the views of the Minister are to this issue, which presumably must still go through the relevant tribunal rather than being decided on a political whim.
On the other hand, if the merger does finally proceed, it will be interesting to see whether it affiliates with One World or Star Alliance - or maybe it could be the first airline to be in two alliances simultaneously?

Qantas has in fact been in Star as well as smallworld for quite some time. You can earn and burn reciprocal points on some SAS flights, and you can often see internet offers of tickets written on a mixture of QF/NZ/BA coupons.
The flying 'roo sleeps around as and when it makes good commercial sense.
Dixon has a near pathological contempt for alliances, since they have both failed to deliver effectively on any of the promises that matter to him (not us), namely transparent back office systems and protocols and effective joint buying of resources and price fixing deals (oops..understandings.)
Equally, the management is very enamoured of joint service agreements as with BA and soundly based code shares as with SAA (soon to be Star?) JL (nobody's alliance) Asiana (because KL is in Star).
