TP Reports 15 Million Euro Profit In 2004

TAP Portugal should report a 15 million euro profit in 2004, announced Mr. Fernando Pinto, TP CEO, on an interview to a Brazilian magazine.

These results, positive for the second time in 30 years, come from a 9% increase in income, and come in spite of the increase in fuel prices that caused an additional 75 million euro fuel bill. For 2005 the forecast is of a more moderate growth in income, around 4% to 6%.

Fernando Pinto stated that the Brazilian operation, now with 38 weekly flights, already represents 22% of the total income of the airline. "For each 100 euro that enters the company, 22 come form Brazil, 50 from Portugal and the rest from Europe. We made Portugal a great platform for traffic distribution between Europe and Brazil", reports the CEO.

He also stated that "from here now, only the companies that modernize will survive. This is what we are doing. We started a new cycle, with a new image that shows a young and aggressive company".

Great news for TAP, Fernando Pinto is doing a really great job and I only hope that this growth continues for years to come. And I just love the new livery!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Thank you very much for the great news on TAP! No doubt, TAP not only managed to survive, but is also now an airline with excellent performance, and expanding its network.

Its "Top Executive" products also puts it on the league of quality airlines, offering lie-flat seats with private spheres, something only few airlines have.

It will increase to 49 weeklly flights as of April (NAT nonstop flights will increase from 3 x week to 4 x week).

Very intelligent strategy of TAP's CEO, Sr. Fernando Pinto. TAP has found a market niche in Brazil, especially Northeast Brazil, and are getting the benefits out of it.

When Sr. Pinto took over TAP, in 2000, nobody had hopes on TAP, they were running a huge debt, and flying unprofitable routes.

Sr. Pinto, a Brazilian national, was recently elected the Head of the powerful European Airline Association (EAA). He was the only non-European ever elected Head of the EAA.

Next month TAP will join Star Alliance, another bold move representing the wide recognition of TAP.

Sr. Pinto is one of the top airline managers in the world.

Great news!!!

I like the modernizing piece also, specifically if it relates to modernize the current fleet  Smile .... Let's wait and see.

Just hope the next portuguese government doesn't mess and decides to change the management team of TAP.

The past history hasn't been great and Mr. Fernando Pinto almost left the company recently because of Mr. Cardoso e Cunha who doesn't understand anything about the aviation business and left the company with a good retirement plan for the little time that has spent there.

I'm hope he's including new planes to be modern and not just a new livery!!!

I guess it's the question that no one person knows for sure just rumors...

Pesonally, I'm hoping they opt for the Boeing 787 (like their other soon to be Star Alliance siblings) as it's a great replacement for their A310 and A343 ageing aircraft.

But most likely it will be the A332 and A333.

I think there's very little chance they'll buy Boeing. TAP is committed to being an all Airbus fleet. With such a small fleet, commonality is a factor. Also, which other Star Alliance carriers have ordered the 787? None. I have a feeling they'll get more used A310's or/and A340's. They can get them cheap and they get the job done.

Minimal. They cant even fill the A340 to EWR (it was redeployed to SSA recently, and EWR is now getting the A310). I would say that UA will start flights IAD-LIS, in full codeshare with TP, or AC could also start YYZ-LIS.

Using TAP's onward connection, LIS would serve as the gateway for both AC and UA for the Iberian Peninsula and Southern Europe in general,

Try... ANA, and New Zealand, so far... and others not yet announced but good candidates are LH, LOT, Singapore, and AC. United once they get out of their rut is most likely to go with the 787

Hardiwv.. you are generalizing a bit here... TP has always switched or redeploy their aircraft because of seasonal demand. So this recent switch to SSA means nothing other than its the slow season to EWK.

The A310 has been serving EWR for quite some time now (2 years to be precise!) - it's not seasonal. You could say the other way around: the A340 is being used to SSA because of high seasonal demand for traffic to SSA. It is possible that the A340 is in SSA to stay. It is a rare sight to see TP A340 in EWR.

Still, if the market is strong, you would not re-deploy a higher capacity plane somewhere elese. For exemple, TAP uses the A340 to GRU, GIG and JNB-MPM all-year-around, high and low season.

Not true at all... TP A340 flies to Newark all the time in the summer.. at least few times a week...

I'm not debating with you TP's current mission of serving Brazil. EWK demand is softer right now than SSA and TP swaps planes... happens all the time... This is MY POINT!

Simple question: can we consider EUR 15 million a positive result for an european airline with the dimension of TAP (38 planes)? They can't do anything with small ammount of money...a 10 million loss or 15 profit is the same in airline numbers...

Did IB, LH, BA, etc had positive results? How much?

In this ultra competative environment and with high fuel costs... coming out with a 15 million gain... is nothing short but awesome.

According to the article the fuel costs rose to another 75 million Euros... so this profit could have been 90 million... enough for a new plane or two...

I also have to disagree with this statement. While the A310 is supposed to be the main aircraft serving LIS-EWR-LIS, in the 4 times ive been to EWR in the past 6-7 months, I have seen the A340 there each time.

One time it was holding short for us...then it left. That was a nice end to that trip.

Flew is in Jan 04 from LIS. CS-TOD to be exact. Very comfortable aircraft!

You have a point. Although this is small amount of money (TAM of Brazil today posted EUR 130 million profit in 2004), you have to take into account that Portugal is a small country, and TAP has a small fleet. Also, most airlines are posting a LOSS (in Europe vide SK, LX, AZ, not to mention all US carriers!).

In 2000, for example, TAP was running a debt of more than EUR 100 million/year.

For the single fact that TAP is posting a profit, in the third consecutive year, is already an indication of good management and that the airline is doing well.

I've heard, is just a rumour, that TAP Maintenance is waiting for 2 A330's from Swiss.

Don't know in what conditions, it's just what I've heard from someone that works for TAP.

Boeing Bus, if Pinto was there and people let him work, Varig could be a good airline, unfortunately the backstages talk loud here, specially with RG.
RG is a crap, but VEM and VarigLog are aquite profitable.

RG has the following profitable arms:

- Varig Mainstenance and Engineering (VEM): one of the top 10 in the world of this area, highly profitable (2003 profits of EUR 70 million);
- VarigLog: the biggest cargo ariline in LatAm, also profitable;
- PLUNA/PU: the flag carrier of Uruguay;
- Smiles: RG FF program, the largest of its kind in LatAm with 3 million members;

Unfortunately, ex-RG CEO Mr. Pinto left the airline, and now RG is in this bad shape, with HUGE debts. If he remained, maybe RG would had been a different airline today.

TAP Maintenance is waiting for 2 A330's from Swiss

Very good news, and they would be perfect for now.
