Hey everyone, just got a call from my buddy 'erj' at the ERAU Prescott campus and he said he just saw an MD-11 go missed over the campus. He wasn't sure but he said it looked like possibly world airways from the colors. Did anyone else see this at riddle and is anyone else aware of MD-11s shooting approaches at smaller airports possibly for practice?
Cheers

We saw it!!!

It was a world airways md-11 and it did two low approaches, then headed towards the west after buzzing the campus. We were waiting over the 3R fence to see if it would come back, and there was like 10 people waitng there (all from riddle of course). Sadly it didn't come back  Sad

I guess the pilot must have been from Riddle, every once in a while we get F-18s and the like come "visit" us here because they were riddle students. I love it when fighters come visit us, but when I saw the MD-11, I sh*t my pants!  Big thumbs up

I didn't get the reg for it, but it was just like this one:

OHHH YEAH!!!!! There was a World MD-11 that appeared to do 2 low flybys at PRC airport. I am not sure if it actually landed or not, but I know it did a flyby at PRC, and then did a flyby of the campus. Was absolutely amazing, even with the clouds and rain we have over here. Anyone know who the pilot might have been, or where the flight was en-route too? I am guessing it was an ex-riddle pilot who decided to give us a sight of a life time here at PRC. If anyone has any more info, please post. Also if there are any other pilots out there who are bored one day, go ahead and do a low flyby at Prescott, guarantee there will be 1700 eyes all gazing at you!!!

The only a/c I show anyplace out there was N272WA operating a ferry from ATL to RIV, and he blocked in at RIV at 2020z.

Clipper002: Now THAT's kinda scary. I would think that you, of anyone here, would have heard about something like that! Wouldn't the crew usually let dispatch know about a detour like that? Also, wouldn't a couple of flybys be reflected in an increased fuel burn (and wouldn't someone at headquarters be pissed about the extra fuel usage)?

Now I'm really curious.

All the best,

Bill

Bill,
You're absolutely correct. That's why I would want to know the exact time this took place. We only had one aircraft in the region and it would appear as though they had already landed in RIV when this was reported. I am not stating that anyone didn't really see what they said they saw, but I would like some form of confirmation. This type of thing could get a crew fired in an instant if there's any truth to it.

Clipper002: Well, it looks to be less than 300 miles from Prescott to RIV as the crow flies, and the first post was time-stamped at 19:52 Zulu (actually 20:52 at UTC + 1). Assuming an hour for the poster to receive the phone call and make the post, it seems doable; less than that and it would be a little tight, I would think.

I was also thinking maybe it was Omni or something, but the students at THIS campus would definitely know the difference between a DC10 and an MD11.

Hmmmmmm.

All the best,

Bill

A guy in my hall was holding short for 21L when this happened. He said the MD-11 called tower 100 miles out, and requested practice ILS approaches. Callsign was world xxx heavy. Then he flew over the runway twice at around 50ft.

Somebody took pictures of it. I'll see if I can get them and post them.

I can help you guys out

ERJ called and left a message according to the machine at 11:28AM SFO time, I got back to him about 30mins later and he told me about it. We chatted for about 10 mins, then I posted this thread within 10 mins later.
Hope this helps. And trust me, ERJ knows the diff between an MD11 and DC10 as do most riddlers.

It was sometime around 12:20 local time.

I'm not too sure everyone on this campus is quite up on their AC ID. The first guy to see it near me said, "Hey, is that a MD-80 or something?" It was definitely an MD-11. The only thing I couldn't tell was whether it was Cargo or Pax, I was not in a good spot to see the side. I'm guessing Cargo.

TJ, Thanks for the vote of confidence on the ID!  Smile

ERJ
Yeah, As much as the world would like to think us ERAU PRC students are up to there aircraft IDs, they really aren't. The first person I saw pointing to the a.c was like "wow check out that DC-10" now granted a MD-11 looks a lot more like a DC-10 then an MD-80, but there are still good differences. I am still curious if the pilot was an ex-ERAU PRC student coming to show off his mighty bird, or to poke fun at all the riddle kids in there cessnas. Non the less it was a great show, and if the pilot of the MD-11 ever reads this message, Thanks a lot from a generally airline deprived flight school. Yeah F-18s, and F-16s are cool when they fly by, but nothing beats the shear size, and noise the MD-11 brings with it!!

TJ,
LOL....no I have not been to GFK lately, at least you get DC-9s, avros, saabs, and the occasional charter. The biggest commercial flight we get is the daily Mesa Beech 1900D from PHX. It's great the first 10 times spotting it, but after that it just boring. As for the picture, I was walking to the cafeteria, so no I did not have my camera with me, of course the time I really wanted it, I don't have it. I do know some friends who did get pics of it, I will try to get a hold of a few, and post them on the forum.
Cheers
