Last Day For NGO: Goodbye Komaki

Today February 16th is the final day for Nagoya International Airport.

Last Domestic Departure: NGO-FUK JL3229 at 20:05
Last Domestic Arrival: FUK-NGO NH238 at 20:55
Last International Departure: NGO-GUM JO945 at 20:40
Last International Arrival: HKG-NGO CX532 at 21:00

My first time to NGO was in 1999 to meet my girlfriend's parents. I flew on a NW 744 from Detroit. I remember asking the pilot, "So what is NGO like?" he told me, "Exciting. Not like Kaitak but fun. The runway is only 2,740m long." Then he told me the great news, "The guy who is landing...its his first flight as captain of a 744. His first landing."

We came down out of the sky and used almost the entire runway to land. When I left 2 weeks later I remember the pilot revving up the engines as we left the taxiway. We took off with only 300 or 400 meters left.

NGO international terminal was built in 1996. Which is sad, only 9 years of use. It was modern and comfortable but lacked real international services. It had been built on top of the old terminal as they didn't change the baggage claim at all.

It was not a big airport; 17 aircraft parking spots for Jumbo Jet, 3 aircraft parking spots for Medium-sized Jet, 7 aircraft parking spots for small-sized jet, 2 areas for small-sized plane.

Just sitting for an hour at NGO you could watch a 747, A330, 737, MD80, a piper, helicopters and an SDF jet land and take off. All planes took off right in front of you. You could watch them taxi to either end of the runway and take off. The backdrop was the lower Japanese alps and Komaki Castle. Families would show up at the park at the end of the runway to watch the planes and spotters put up ladders to get some great shots.

Being only 20 minutes by bus from the downtown it was very convenient. I will miss seeing Nagoya Castle on my out there. I will miss coming in on a local road and seeing up close planes on the tarmac getting readied for flight.

But tonight at 11:00 the airport will officially close its doors.

After the last flight leaves, all parked planes will be ferried to Chubu, the title NGO will be transferred to Chubu, and all ground equipment will be moved. It will remain an airport for J-Air (serving 6 cities), Komaki Base of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (tactical air lift) and an aircraft plant of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

By 2:00am NGO will be empty. Come tomorrow morning, the NGO that we all know will be reborn as, Aichi Prefectural Airport Nagoya GA (general Aviation).

You were unappreciated by many in Japan.
You lived in the shadow of NRT and KIX.
But...We will miss you Nagoya Komaki.

I've been to NGO a few times and always liked the airport. The domestic terminal was a little drab, but the international terminal was spacious, tastefully designed, and had a great observation deck! While it was obviously constrained by its location, every time I flew through their my experience was one of quintessential Japanese efficiency.

While I will miss Komaki, I look forward to using Centrair.

Last flight out of Komaki last night was a charter flight for Airline ethusiasts.

JL 767 flew out at 20:30 Wednesday the 16th from Nagoya. Went to Saipan, refueled and flew to Chubu arriving at 6:45 Thursday morning.

Chubu is up and running with zero problems.

I will miss it. I was there 2 weeks ago and found it a real treat. Really reminded me of San Jose. A good size airport surrounded with buildings. I am glad that I was able to fly into it just weeks before the new one. Next time I am there so see my friend, it will be a whole new airport!

The new airport is NGO. The old airport is NKM. It stands for Nagoya Komaki Municipal

Komaki had the shortest runway of any Major International serving airport in East Asia.

Chubu (Centrair) is designed for heavy loads. It is an exciting place. We will be seeing 787 parts flying out of there soon!

Interestingly, the airport's flight information display system shows the "Continental" flights to GUM and HNL with the CS code for Continental Micronesia, while the codeshare on Northwest to DTW shows up with the CO code.

It is strange considering the planes that fly in are just the CO brand. And on the big boards they are listed as Continental/Northwest Codeshare.

I have never seen a plane with the CS livery in Nagoya.

If you look at the flights to ICN, they are almost all listed as KE/DL flights even though DL left Nagoya in 2001.

Chubu is turning into an Alliance hub. Each one is coming in and competing.
Star has won by getting their own lounge, but Skyteam is right behind with flights on KE,NW,CO,AF(JL) and special JL lounge access. AA's flight from Chicago has a perfect slot and will line up with a CX flight continuing on to HKG and TPE and a QA/Australian flight to Cairns.

Vietnam airlines is expected to come in to NGO in the next quarter.

In Freight news: Evergreen will do direct Daily freight to Columbus soon. DHL, UPS and FedEX have all lined up for service. JL and NH Cargo have tripled their services. Singapore doubled.

KIX and NRT authorities are now considering lowering their landing fees. NRT may halve some of their landing fees. Chubu is being considered a threat to these airports as it is in an ideal location right in the middle between Tokyo and Kansai.

Kansai Authority is nervous as their business depends on tourists going to Kyoto and Nara. However Chubu flights are to become cheaper and access is almost the same in the end (Haruka Train vs. Shinkansen). 1hr 15 to KIX and 1HR 20 to NGO.

Too bad A.net hasn't updated and many Japanese Spotters have yet to join (poor English Skills). A friend of mine told me that today there were hundreds of spotters out at the airport starting at 6:00 waiting for the first plane.

Yesterday both domestic, international and park spotting areas were packed with spotters taking last photos.

I guess I just have to wait till I get down there or some Good A.net photographers show up. ... not holding my breath.
How do we get Chubu added to the picture search?

The last international arrival CX532 is B-HNA (B777-267s). Thereafter she was ferried as CX3331 to RJGG (Nagoya Chubu).

Visited NGO ( RJNN) twice in last few years. I must say while international traffic was not as diverse as others, the choice of vantage points made NGO as one of the best field in Japan (I'd even stretch as far in saying best in Asia). Domestic terrace was fantastic, while the "car dealer" place along the international terminal was like getting a ramp access.
I will sorely missed NGO... as it would have been on my itinery everytime I visit Japan.

The aircraft registration of the last (non-ferry) flight out of Komaki and the first arrival at Chubu was JA609J, a Boeing 767-346ER of JAL.

Farewell to Komaki (for most passenger service) and hats off for a smooth transition. Let's hope that Centrair does better financially than Kansai and being underbudget is a great way to start. I hope to visit Centrair sometime soon.

Anyone know where I can find pics of the new airport (especially the terminal)? I know that Centrair's old website had construction pics showing the progress of the construction but I can't find anything like that on the new website and the old one was taken down...the last construction pics were from November.

I remember NGO before the international terminal retrofit. I went to Nagoya International School from 92-95. I remember the terminal then was pretty sparse and simple. We used to go transpacific on KE from LAX to old SEL then over to NGO. Because of ticket fares then, the school wouldn't pay for the DL flight to PDX. However it was always a madhouse late at night when the KE bird got in, as CX and a few other jumbos came at the same time and the small terminal was almost overloaded.

Settlement is not expected to be a serious problem for Centrair unlike with Kansai. The area Chubu is in has shallower water than Kansai and the underwater soil is supposed to be a lot more stable than the clay layers Kansai was built on. I'm sure a lot was learned from Kansai's mistakes and that knowledge was applied to Centrair.

I have the great privilege of making two photo-trips to Komaki Airport and enjoyed the photography tremendously.

As shared by CX777, the international traffic's not as diverse but the great perspectives from a variety of locations around the airfield produces great results. It is difficult to choose between the end of the runway where the planes turned to line-up or shooting from the domestic terminal's observation deck - both produces great pictures.

And the community living around the airport are also very tolerant of aircraft photographers and spotters - to them I am very grateful. When it rained suddenly once, I was even invited to take shelter in the premises of a company that deals with paper products! Thankfully, I made my last "pilgrimage" to Komaki last October, the day it expected a typhoon and the day after, the weather was superb!

I will always have fond memories of Komaki but look forward to Centrair.
