Hi !

I noticed on a website that ex-UA N767UA will become PP-VRI and is being refurbished for delivery to RG. I guess RG will also take PP-VRG and PP-VRH ? I guess those are ex-UA as well, N766UA and N770UA ? More info anyone ?

Thanks for the information:

Could you post the website again?

Indeed, RG is to take delivery of at least another B777s during 2005. Currently RG has six B777s and is the only airline in LatAm operating the B777.

I guess RG will also take PP-VRG and PP-VRH ? I guess those are ex-UA as well, N766UA and N770UA ?

You are correct.

RG is phasing out the B767s from its fleet...I also hope they phase out their old and worn out MD-11s!

Any one knows when it's due to enter service? Or is it already in service?

Thanks,

Here is RG current fleet of B777s:

B777-ER (PP-VRA) original
B777-ER (PP-VRB) original
B777 (PP-VRC) ex-BA
B777 (PP-VRD) ex-BA
B777-ER (PP-VRE) ex-UA
B777-ER (PP-VRF) ex-UA

PP-VRG, PP-VRH and PP-VRGI are to be delivered during 2005, apparently all three witll be ex-UA (last year there was information saying that they would be ex-AF).

I hope RG gets rid of their MD-11s as soon as possible!

Tks for the photo. As pointed out by Flyguy1, B777-ER (PP-VRF) will be used for RG's daily flight GIG-GRU-JFK.

I assume the following routes are priority for PP-VRG/H/I:

1. POA-GRU-CDG-AMS;
2. GIG-GRU-LHR-CPH;
3. GIG-GRU-MUC-PECK (due to start Jul/05)

Although I would rather deploy the B777 to RG's 4 x week GIG-GRU-LAX-NRT...such a long flight on the MD-11 is a complete torture!

How much longer will RG use the M11 on GIG-GRU-LAX-[NRT on certain days]-GRU-GIG? I'd think they'd want to switch to the 777.

RG operates GIG-GRU-LAX-NRT 4 x week, however, RG sources said that the flight will be upgraded to daily and change airports to NGO: GIG-GRU-LAX-NGO daily.

As mentioned above, B777-ER (PP-VRF) will be used for RG's daily flight GIG-GRU-JFK.

I assume the following routes are priority for PP-VRG/H/I:

1. POA-GRU-CDG-AMS;
2. GIG-GRU-LHR-CPH;
3. GIG-GRU-MUC-PECK (due to start Jul/05)

As such, the HORRIBLE MD-11 would remain for quite some time on the route to LAX-NRT.

All RG B777s come with IFE/PVT, as you can see on the photo below:

Their MD-11s are not horrible. I like them. Though I wouldn't mind flying some of these 777s JFK-GRU but I doubt they will use that equipment on that route. I would love it though! This is good news for RG.

Many thanks for the replies !

There's no way the non-ER 777s can fly GRU-LHR/CDG/AMS nonstop since they don't have the range. Flight times on those sectors are over 12h and a non-ER have a range of about 8 1/2 h or perhaps 9h. I can see RG flying these non-ERs to MIA, LIS, MEX and maybe JFK but think they need and ER model for JFK as well. Also likely are flights within South America like CCS, SCL and EZE.

I agree that it would be nice to see RG 777s in LAX. Makes sense on that long flight to NRT as well.

RG will probably relocated some of the B777-ERs used in intra-South American flights to long-range flights.

Currently RG uses the B777 to MIA, FRA, EZE, SCL, MEX and MAD. So there is room to relocate B777-ERs to other fligts. JFK, CDG-AMS, LHR-CPH and LIS are all good candidates.

I dont see RG deploying the B777 to LAX-NRT.

I believe they still have 8 -300s. All -200s have already been phased out.

Quoting B752fanatic (reply 19):

Not yet, but since late last year there have been several positive announcements for RG:

- Big win on a lawsuit against the government (on the billions figure), which could reduce their debt by a third or so.

- The approval by congress of a new bankruptcy law;

- They have been posting profits consistently, and

- Their market share actually grew a little last year (+3%)

I feel like I'm missing something, anyone?

Things have been moving slowly, that's a big problem for them. There are several potential investors willing to buy a stake in RG, among them is the Portuguese group Pestana, TAP, and even GOL.

Cheers,

PPVRA

PS: Well, they also leased more 777s, and 752s.

EDIT: RG's current debt stands at R$7 billion (USD $2.7 billion), the lawsuit they won (R$3 billion or USD $1.2 billion) could reduce their debt by more than 40%, and not by a third as I mentioned above.

I second that. Varig's MD-11 are really showing their age. They are OK for domestic flights but it is inhumane for RG to make us ride them on long flights such as GRU-FRA. I have yet to meet a passenger who stepped out into a terminal after 13 hrs inside an RG MD-11 who said he enjoyed the flight. I mean even business class in RGs MD-11 is considered torture by some! Check the Smiles forum at flyertalk if you don't believe me. It is high time for Varig's MD-11s to follow the fate of their siblings and become freighters.

Other positive aspects: RG's subsidiary VarigLog (cargo) is very profitable and the biggest air cargo company in Latin America; VEM, Varig Engineering and Maintenance is also very profitable and considered one of the top 10 in the world with a staff of +3,000; 3) Uruguay's flag carrier, Pluna, is 49% controled by RG; RG has the biggest FF program in Latin America.

RG's MD-11s are a complete torture and they should be phased out IMMEDIATELY. RG's MD-11 are severely hurting RG's international reputation. RG's MD-11s and 763s should only be used for domestic flights.
