Any Aircraft Able To Do LHR-AKL?

Hello everyone,

Since there are many talks about the new 777LR being able to fly LHR-SYD non stop, I am curious if it will be able to do the LHR-AKL run EastBound/Westbound as well? I just checked the Great Circle Mapper and the distance is 11404 mi (that's almost 1000 miles more than the the LHR-SYD)

Not non-stop. Question is, if there was, would you do it?

People do moan about LAX transit room NZ use, but it does allow you to really get up and stretch- a 20-odd hour non-stop flight sounds quite horrendous.

LHR-AKL = 9910nm. 777LR current estimated range = 9420nm. That's 490nm short. I would not be surprised to see Boeing do it on a demonstration run, though. Perhaps even with some airline execs aboard.

I recall the A340 doing CDG-AKL back in the beginning of the 90s for a "Round the World with one Stop" demonstration.

It can only do it one way. It will not be able to fly both ways, non-stop, with any sort of load. LHR-AKL is even more out of the question.

The 777-200LR is a great jet,. But Qantas has said (and everyone keeps ignoring them) that it is inadequate for commercial operations non-stop on the Sydney-London route either way.

It will happen one day, maybe within 10 years.

But the fact that SQ has said in The Straits Times it is not after more ultra long range jets is a note of warning. What that story means is that with five A345s doing the two ultra long range routes it wants already to Newark and Los Angeles, there just isn't the demand for any more.

Pity the 777-200LR wasn't up to the mark when they placed the Airbus order, but that's life.

We won't get any super long range jets until there is serious demand in the market place.

Since when does Qantas speak for the world's airlines? Qantas isn't even one of the world's 10 largest airlines for that matter.

Concentrate man. I didn't claim they were speaking for the world's airlines. I was pointing out that while some posters are saying the jet could do the LHR-SYD route non-stop the principal operator on the route, and a long time good customer of Boeing, is saying that it can't YET.

It was an A340-200 "World Ranger" (F-WWBA). It was a LBG - AKL (not CDG-AKL). and it was on June 18th 1993. The distance was covered after a 21h31 mn nonstop flight.

because it is one of the world's more profitable airlines. It has money to spend on
aircraft. It doesn't represent the world's airlines, but like SQ/EK is a good litmus test of what capabilities profitable airlines are actually keen on.

Qantas is NOT one of the world's most profitable airlines. It does not earn the costs of capital. It lags WAY behind SQ,EK and CX in network/traditional carriers, and its last half year profit before tax of 9.4 % margin (it's best ever) was two percentage points behind Virgin Blue's 11.4% for its first half, which was its worst ever.

I get really sick of the tripe that gets published in the media, and then spouted on A.net.

Im thinking more along the lines of Virgin....they're always up for something bigger and better ... longer and further...

In a low-density configuration of about 200 seats (appropriate for such an ultra long haul), the B777-200LR probably could fly passengers with their bags nonstop from LHR to AKL. However, a stop would definitely be required in the AKL-LHR direction. Further, even eastbound there would be little if any capacity for cargo, so it seems unlikely to be profitable given the smaller volume of high-yield passengers compared to LHR-SYD/MEL. Even with a future large increase in MTOW, I still don't see the B777-200LR flying LHR-AKL nonstop in commercial service because additional fuel capacity would be needed for AKL-LHR or to carry cargo LHR-AKL.

QF used to operate the longest routes of any airline, and might still hold the title, so it would have some say in specifications or requirements for ultra long-range aircraft.
