CO 737-100?

I could have sworn I was on a CO 737-100 from BUF to EWR in 1994. It was very small, of course, and seemed pretty old. I remember being a little nervous due to the a/c age...not that I worry about that anymore. And if I am not mistaken, there were not many of them, so pretty cool to get to fly on one.

The photo database backed up my recollection that the history of CO 737-100's for the most part were ex-Lufthansa aircraft picked up by PEOPLExpress. I flew on one EWR-BTV. I sat next to a non-revving pilot who said it was a -100 when I commented it seemed as small as a couple I'd flown on with AirCal.

I thought so...Thanks for your input. I would guess that they are no longer in service...for US carriers anyway. But then again, I am pretty sure I saw a DC-9-10 at CLT three years ago...and they are probably just as old!

From the photographer's comments on the photos in the database, I would think they have all been scrapped by now, but I wouldn't know off-hand. You probably did see a DC-9-10 at CLT, especially if it was in NW colors, since they just retired the last of their fleet of -10's last month (?) ... but that's a whole 'nuther thread.

I flew in a CO 731 from Newark to Buffalo in 1991. Weirdly enough, every CO 737-100 ever spotted seems to have been in Buffalo. Did they literally just shuttle their small 731 fleet between the two cities? I bet a search of the photo database here will only show the plane at those two airfields.

Continental operated flights DCA-CLE until 1998 using 737-100.

I flew a CO 737-100 from EWR-Buffalo in 1992, they were common at EWR but did not venture too far away from the hub.

CO flew the 731 sometimes on the EWR-ORF route as well.

Interesting -- the first 737 built, one with Lufthansa's code with Boeing, -130, was flying for NASA as recently as 2003.

Indeed, the 737-130s were PEOPLExpress aircraft, which flew most of that airline's network until the 727-227s came online to serve Houston and Denver and the 747-127s to London. PEOPLExpress's first flights were between EWR and Buffalo, but the airline expanded at a breath-taking pace. I was fortunate to have flown these birds between EWR and PIT. The Lufthansa 1960s "penthouse" interiors had been replaced by early 1980s earth tones - in fact, I'm sure most passengers thought they were flying on new aircraft.

Regos were N401PE to N420PE (?). Later 737s were ex-Nordair -217s.

Only the former LH People Express 737’s were –100’s and I believe they operated only 13 of them N401PE to N413PE. The next 737’s People Express obtained were 3 ex CPAir –200’s, N414PE to N416PE.

I had a friend who worked for People Express and I was at the People Express hanger when the first of the CPAir 737’s arrived. I also remember looking up the aircraft times on the ex LH 737’s and they all averaged about 35,000 flight hours and 35,000 landings except for 2 that were used for flight training and they had a few more flight hours but over 50,000 landings on them. The ex LH airplanes maintenance was extraordinary, they were so clean when PEX got them it looked like they were just delivered from the factory, even in the back side of the wing were the flap mechanism is located.

Here's a bit of useless trivia for you...
Because there were still a handful of 731s in service (Ship # 201-209 range), the first 51 delivered 738s were Ships 210-250 before backfilling 201-209 with deliveries 52-60.

You forgot N417PE, LH built in 2-69 #19794.I flew this one CLE-MBS as CO with PeopleExpress markings sometime in mid 80's.

I'm finding CP Air 737's but they are 200's.

Just a little more on history:
Air Cal's 731s belonged to Avianca, they were delivered new to AV in the late 60s as HK-1403X and HK-1404X, almost like launch customers! (besides LH and AV I think SQ also got brand new 731s)



I gladly accept donations to pay for flight hours! This thing draws man...
