Silvers are not given upgrades automatic like Platinums. When you check in for your flight (which I encourage you to do so early) you can be put on the upgrade list. Upgrades will be worked in the following:
Congrats on reaching Silver...and thank you for flying NWA!!!

yeah on most of hte cross country flights you will most likely see first full of platinums ahead of time..if you check in at the kiosk it will automatically put you on the upgrade list and will even show it on the boarding pass.
okay, I'm waiting for the rich to spread the wealth around to me. Please mail your checks to my house.

CO and NW have retained their existing partnership that they had before joining SkyTeam. Upgrades are not yet a domestic benefit for SkyTeam Elite members.
It can happen under certain circumstances, specifically the overbooked Y situation. That has happened to me on CO and NW while I am DL Platinum Medallion / SkyTeam Elite Plus.
The in-place CO/NW partnership allows for reciprocal upgrades among elites, priority given to native carrier Plat/Gold/Silv then same hierarchy for CO OnePass Elite members IIRC. There simply are not enough F/C seats for domestic 'free' upgrades for all SkyTeam elite passengers.
For all you DL Elites - when is the last time you saw an empty F/C seat??

I am Silver on CO & DL, but now trying to build my status further with CO. I consider myself one lucky flyer because in the past year, no matter how many connections I had with NW, it has always been upgraded to first class! I never even asked for them, it just happened! In fact. My last flight (EWR-DTW-SDF and back the same) back in Jan. I was upgraded! Like I said, I feel lucky! THANK YOU NWA!! Funny, I just flew CO back on Tuesday from LAX-EWR (752) and indeed requested an upgrade, but didn't get any! I will be flying to LEX next month, and if I fly NW, I wont be surprised to get a free upgrade!

if you are traveling on a YUP fare class you are not lucky, that is the program NW started several years ago that allows connecting passangers in hub airports to receive a complimentary upgrade. I took advantage of this many times last year when DL's B fare BNA-IAD was 784.50 (prior to Simplifares) and NW YUP was 724.50, I flew in first every week getting DL miles while other people on DL B fares could not touch an upgrade out of IAD on a Friday afternoon.
