Alaska Airlines, How Much For De-icing?

For a carrier like Alaskan and even other carriers who operate a large amount flights to cities which freeze over during the winter this must get expensive.
I wanted to know:
How much does it cost to de-ice a 737? (How many gallons on average)
What is the difference between type I and IV?
How much does a carriers like Alaskan pay a year for this service?

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I do have a point to make. Just because a city freezes for the winter, doesn't mean that the planes have to be deiced. For example, FAI is below freezing for half the year. But Fairbanks has a very dry and cold climate, which is not conducive to icing. So deicing usually only occurs at the beginning and end of winter. I'm pretty sure that the same occurs in northern places like Barrow, Nome, and Kotzebue. The south, which includes places like Anchorage, Bethel, Juneau, and the panhandle, has a much moister climate so deicing probably occurs more often there than the northern half of the state.

Bear in mind, out of all the times I've stopped in ANC in winter, my plane has only been deiced once and that was in March. I've never been deiced in FAI.

Cost depends on how much glycol costs at the moment. Right now, as you said, it'd pretty high so de-icing a plane costs more. On average, a 737 I would guess uses a little over 50 gallons for a basic de-icing (no heavy snow, ice or other build up).

The difference between type I and IV is what it's used for. Type I is typically mixed with water aroung 50/50 and used for de-icing. It's orange in color.

Type IV is green in color and typically used 100% uncut and is used for anti-icing.

How much do they pay/year? Like I said that's up to the market price of glycol, number of de-icing events that year, amount of overtime needed to de-ice, etc.

You go to SE Alaska and its not much colder then Seattle or San Francisco even. So this is to just let you know maybe you want to ask in general and not so much Alaska Airlines. Now to answer your question is almost impossible. It all depends on current weather, temp.,wait times for departure, and current prices. There are a few types of fluid like NTS said. On top of the types of fluid, there are different mixes. Here at SFO we use a 50/50 mix but only have to deice the upper wings of MD80's and CR7's,so not much fluid is used. Now on the flip side I was on a HP A320 at CLE in Dec. that required Type I then type IV on the wings. So as you can see its very hard to even come up with a general number.

I am quite sure their bean counters know exactly how much they're spending on deicing, per year. However, I'm not sure you will find one of them on this forum  Smile Another place where you may find that sort of information may be their annual report.

I was e-mailed by a fellow a.netter. He told me that the contract his company has is for 1,700 USD per 73G. A little more for a 739 and a little less for a 732. Depending on the conditions, He said that they could use anywhere from 50 to 200 gallons so, they charge for 200 gallons always.

A lot of companies are starting to get hot air blowers for the de-ice operations. The Air Force has them, doesn't screw up the water as much and you aren't buying fluid constantly.

I was taking a guest to the airport yesterday afternoon, and It was the first time i saw it, But they were de-icing a 737-700 Right next to the fence by the old delta gate ( the number escapes me at the moment, d1 i think )
Any, That was the first time i've ever seen it as well.
