Longhaul Flights From ZRH In The Past...

OK, copyright for this idea goes to Avianca, who startet a similar thread on MUC: http://www.airliners.net/discussions...eneral_aviation/read.main/1980830/

But it got me thinking that there is one airport in Europe which has really slipped in significance, which is ZRH, and one evidence of this is the loss of longhaul flights. Here are the ones I can think of:

DL to CVG, JFK
AA to anything else than DFW (?)
TW to JFK
PA to JFK, continuing to STR
RG to GRU, SSA
VP to GRU and some other places I believe
AR to EZE
KQ to NBO (?)
ME to BEY
IR to THR (?)
KE to SEL, one of KE's first European destinations
JL to NRT
CX to HKG
GA to CGK (?)

plus all the destinations LX has axed from the old SR network. Maybe someone can fill the gap here.

Which ones have I forgotten?

Thanks

Qantas used to fly to Zurich or Geneva, one of the two, can't remember which. And it's worth noting that TWA used 747s, very nice.

There were a lot of SR destinations. I can't remember all but some as:

Washington, Philadelphia, Atlanta, San Francisco, Toronto, Osaka, Shanghai, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Manila, Karachi, Kingshasa, Dakar, Cape Town, Oguadougou and many others in Africa.

JL to NRT

AA still flies to DFW and JFK out of ZRH; and as I know JL is still here and flies to NRT.

Don't remember me, it makes me cry. But it's true from the mid 80s until some months before the sad end there were 2weekly flights ZRH-CCS, mainly combined with another city such as OPO with that nice DC10:

Yes, but they used to fly ORD-ZRH as well. They were also planning MIA-ZRH, but it never started.

I think there is not enough traffic for two flights a day between ZRH and MIA or ORD. At the moment Swiss flies between those cities and AA codeshares. As they also do vice-versa on there respective JFK flights.

Clearly. That's why AA ended ORD-ZRH and why MIA-ZRH never got off the ground.

I dont recall SR flying to Ouagadougou, but in 1987 they flew to destinations like Bahrain, Khartoum, Monrovia, Dakar, Kuwait, Caracas and of course Anchorage. Santiago de Chile was added later on.

Air Madagascar flew Antananarivo-Nairboi-Zurich-Paris.

Swissair obviously flew to lots of exotic destinations over the years, but in the last 10 years, these are the destinations given up by either Swissair or Swiss:

Philadelphia
Washington
Atlanta
San Francisco
Cincinnati (DL code share)

Rio de Janeiro
Buenos Aires
Santioago De Chile

Cape Town
Harare
Kinshasa
Libreville
Abidjan
Lagos
Accra
Dakar
Banjul
Bamako

Abu Dhabi
Tehran
Karachi
Delhi

Jakarta
Ho Chi Minh City
Taipei
Manila
Seoul
Beijing
Shanghai
Osaka

Earlier in time, Swissair, like so many other of the large European airlines, flew to many more destinations.

Other airlines that used to fly to Zurich in the past 10 years or so and don't visit Kloten any longer or have closed some of their routes include:

Air Madagascar (Antananarivo)
Air Seychelles (Mahe, soon to discontinue)
Cabo Verde Airlines (Ilha do Sal)

Air Canada (Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary)
Delta (Cincinnati)
American (Chicago)

VASP (Sao Paulo)
VARIG (Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro)
TAM (Sao Paulo)
Viasa (Caracas)

Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta, Denpasar)
Cathay Pacific (Hongkong)
Air China (Beijing)

KUF
DAM & AMM (through LCA)

OA Stopped serving ZRH as well as HellasJet. Therefore, LX enjoys a monopoly on ATH-ZRH route

As far as I know, Swiss is still operating to both Doula and Yaounde in Cameroon. Yaounde is served once weekly, via Malabo. Previously Yaounde was served nonstop and the flight continued to Libreville in Gabon. Douala is served twice weekly, also via Malabo. Douala was previously linked to Kinshasa. Swissair has not served Dammam or Dhahran in the recent past. Both KUF and AMM are not longhaul destinations.

Gulf Air (AUH or BAH)
PIA Pakistan Intl Airlines (KHI-ZRH on 310 and later KHI-ZRH-JFK vv. on 742)
Air India
Nigeria Airways (from LOS)
Ghana Airways (not sure about them)
Air Afrique (don't know if they flew with own act but they had codeshare on SR)

I think QF operated to both. I remember having seen some QF L1049 pics at ZRH

Oh I miss the good old Swissair days and when Kloten still had all kinds of traffic. When I was small, I remember seeing VASP coming on their MD-11 and SA with ther 747. I will never forget those Swissair 747s, and the funny Swissair Asia tail. I also remember VIA with the Tupolev TU-154. Swissairs future was to get the A346 and to paint them with a blue belly...how sad. brokenheart
