If Continental had a hub at DFW with nonstop flights I would always fly them, unfortunantely good things take time.

Despite the appearance of dust on them, it looks like the landing gears are covered, the doors and some windows sealed or covered over, like for long term storage and probable return to service. Maybe UA is keeping them for backup if they have any problems or are doing MX with the 747's they use for the LAX-AUK/SYD/MEL service. Maybe they could end up being converted to freighers if the price is right.

Those planes are in no danger of being broken up. As it is, UA is bringing back their owned 744s to replace the 777s they have had to RTL. Also, the ones that are not coming back are headed to various other operators.

LAX-AKL has not flown for some time now with UA. Also, it was a 772ER when it ended. There has been talk of a restart, but it has not happened yet. UA would have to do more than just fly those planes in from VCV to get them ready for service.

Looks to me like they are being preserved for long term storage. If they were going to be made into coke cans, I would have figured alot of parts like the eninges would be missing

ok thanks for all the info i just did not want these planes to have the same fate as some of the L1011s (it makes me mad that they are scrapping these) i think they would make good high density fast freighters.

thanks again for all input the rest of this thread may be used to talk about planes nearing or at the end of their career if you want.

any input on the L1011s is also appreciated

Hey Matt,

I better not show you any pictures I take when I go to the boneyard in Kingman. You can't handle it!  Acting devilish

I doubt those 747s will be scrapped. Either UA or some other carrier can use them.

Obama could have went to see wounded soldiers, he went to the gym instead. McCain, country first.

Quite a few of these will go to Corsair. Only 2 of them are still under United's control/maintenance. None will be beer cans at this time.

13 L-1011's are supposed to leave VCV to fly in Thailand. All ex-Delta's...2 have already gone. Don't worry, L-10's survive!

Regards,

Mike

What? Not that I dislike the L10, but why would they use the L10's when there are more recent 767's on the market? The 762's that American and United are parking would be far more economical to operate.

Wouldn't be too surprised to have them back into service as UA pushes more aircraft into the Asian/Pacific market.
Some ex-UA 744 went to Corsair too.
Besides when the 744SF really gets going there will be no 744s lying around.

IFIXCF6,
Are you serious about the 13 L-10s going to Thailand? They have been sitting at VCV for four years. But, it wouldn't surprise me much. Phuket Air bought some really old YS-11 from Japan when there are plenty of DHC-8 & ATR on the market.

The L1011s are pushing 30 years old, with little or no support from Lockheed to maintain them. Those 744s at most are half of the age of the L1011s that are being scrapped. They stil have plenty of life in them.
