Rebuilding Concorde G-BBDG

Work got underway today to rebuild Concorde 202 (G-BBDG) at Brooklands

The same company that rebuilt G-BOAA in Scotland are rebuilding Delta Golf

Brooklands was where the forward and rear fuselage section as well as the tail fins for all 20 Concorde were built before being shipped to Toulouse and Filton, so having a Concorde there is a fantastic way to celebrate the true birthplace of British Aviation

If only new next generatinon, bleedless engines could be installed then maybe the Concorde could again start flights

We expect to have her looking ship shape by late summer.

A small viewing area will be set up to allow people to see the work going on.

by Easter 2006 she will be open inside for tours.

A complete set of gears, and much else besides, is in place at Brooklands.
Over the past 18 months, a bunch of people have dedicated much time and effort to get this far, whilst BA and BAE have provided much help, it has been an enthusiast driven project.

Had they not stepped into the breach, G-BBDG might well have been scrapped due to space considerations after G-BOAF arrived at Filton in November 2003.
As the aircraft had been stripped bare by being a BA spares source for 20 years, in fact BA might well have had problems sustaining the Concorde operation through the 1990's without it, when flying rates were highest.

So no matter that G-BBDG never carried fare paying pax (last flight was 24th December 1981), it was a vital part of the Concorde operation, as the first UK production example, so much more common with service aircraft than earlier pre production models, as well as playing a vital role in pre service work, even after service entry this aircraft had an important role to play up to it's last flight.
As late as 2002/2003, DG was used to trial the fitment of the new cockpit doors.

Without DG, BA would have to had grounded a service aircraft for spares years ago, which would have reduced charters which allowed many to fly on Concorde at a much lower price.

Once G-BBDG is complete, it will complete a line up of Vickers/BAC airliners at Brooklands, including a Viking, Viscount, Vanguard, BAC 1-11 and VC-10.

The interior was long since gutted for it's spares role from 1984 onwards, a representative interior featuring several of the types of seat used by BA over the years, is planned for one of the cabins.

The cockpit too is gutted, though the instruments are all available for refitting.
The aircraft was in one piece at Filton (less all flying controls, nose and gear), it was cut for transport to Brooklands, after ASI had done the same for the now re-assembled G-BOAA.

In fact, after G-BOAF's radome was damaged in a ground collision at LHR in October 1995, a replacement from DG was fitted.
BA built a small hangar for DG at Filton in 1988, a few years after BA brought the aircraft, for long term storage.
The hangar was very basic however, purely to house it, BA/BAe people would enter it, get the part they wanted and off they went.

Brooklands want the completed aircraft to have a greater degree of public access than any other Concorde, with the likely exception of G-BOAC at MAN, which is now looked after by another ConcordeSST.com member.

This is an excellent project, and I for one can't wait to go to Brooklands and see all the aircraft there. Seeing delta-golf will be the icing on the cake!
