Good question, I don't know the answer but I do know that EA had ambitous plans for MCI as a hub. USAIR/EXpress came in way after EA so its possible EA was in A. Anyone know how many flights a day they go to there?

I can't remember which terminal Eastern used for their hub at MCI. I flew them from IND to PHX through MCI once during the mid-80's when they had their hub up and running. I flew through KC a couple of times in the 70's and 80's on TWA and Eastern, and the one thing I do remember about the Eastern flights is that they were in the same terminal where Braniff 1 had their little hub. Because I distinctly remember that both in getting off of my IND flight and in getting on my PHX flight, the jetways still had BI all over them. The BI wasn't painted on or anything, but rather the plastic along the walls of jetway had BI imprinted in it.
I am also interested in hearing about when Eastern had their hub in operation at MCI and how big it got. I'm not a big timetable collector, but I do have quite a few timetables albeit spotty in overall time coverage, and the only Eastern's I have from the 80's are 3/2/84 showing 33 daily EA departures from MCI, and 7/2/85 showing 54 daily EA departures from MCI.

I just realized that the 54 daily departures from MCI in '85 did not include Air Midwest connections - those 54 were for Eastern mainline only. That's very odd that they wouldn't include their connection partner Air Midwest in their timetable. In the back they have the map showing the Air Midwest routes out of MCI and stating that Air Midwest is a connection partner, but they don't list those flights in their timetable.
You have to look in the back in a separate section to find the Air Midwest connecting schedule out of MCI. And in the back section for Air Midwest they show 54 daily departures out of MCI.
So there we have it. In July 1985 Eastern had 54 mainline daily departures from MCI, and Air Midwest had 54 commuter daily departures from MCI, for a total of 108 daily departures.

Eastern opened the MCI hub in late 1983. The timetable you are looking at from March of 1984 I own as well. In that timetable, Eastern still had a larger hub for east-west flights in Houston than the new KC hub, but clearly they were trying to shift focus from Houston where a resurgent and lower fare Continental was doing well against Eastern. Prior to the opening of the MCI hub, EA actually used St Louis as a small connecting facility as well.

Eastern dismantled thier hub in MCI in the summer of 1988, and I've a timetable from December 1987 that shows the bulk of their flights through the hub still operating. Their transcon service had largely been discontinued by then with the night coach running between LAX-PHL one of the last. I flew through MCI constantly in '86, '87 and '88, along with taking their night coach service between LAX-BOS until it was discontinued. These were run with 757's -- the L-1011/DC-10/A300 service for transcon service that did not go via ATL or to/from MIA had long been discontinued.
Flights through MCI were mostly 727-200's and 757's for the bulk of the time the MCI hub was in existence. If you want any details from the 12/15/87 timetable, let me know.

So when you made a connection with EAL in MCI, did you have to go through security when you changed gates or did they have it set up differently then. Were the hallways of Terminal A pretty busy with people making connections like you'd see with present day USAir in PHL or CLT, or was it a lot less busy? I just cannot imagine those narrow hallways allowing for much passenger traffic.

I've not been through PHL in eons, and CLT is a much, much larger operation than EA's MCI hub ever was, which was largely its appeal to me along with their low fares and flight times. Eastbound I usually took the flight from LAX that left about 3AM and arrived in MCI at 7:45AM, connecting to ORD, EWR or DCA that all left within 30-60 minutes of my arrival, and it was busy but not swarming. Westbound I would mainly come through during the 7-8PM bank that was a lot busier.
I don't ever recall having to pass through security again to change gates, and there was rarely any delay from deplaning one flight to boarding the connection. It always went without any hassle. I do remember dreading having to connect anywhere else and losing the 3AM flight once they closed up shop.
To give you an example of the low fares EA offered, I've a ticket receipt from Sept/87, LAX-MCI-EWR-MCI-LAX in Q class, purchased one day in advance for a grand total of $322.00. It had to have been fully refundable/changeable, because my boarding passes show I returned via ATL a day after the flights for which I was originally ticketed. Not bad at all.

Didn't United also try operating a small hub at MCI in the early eighties before Eastern? I remember this because UA operated a SAN-MCI flight for a while. Also I know TWA had a good operation out of MCI in the eighties as well. I was on a LHR-SAN routing in November of '84 with a double transfer at ORD and MCI.

I worked for EAL, we had a hub in MCI until 09/01/88.
It was primarily East-West traffic and ATL was North-South
Eastern had a big layoff at the time and closed our Res office.
The following month, the announced the same of the EA Air Shuttle.
Braniff II also had a hub in MCI until Sept 1989 when they shut down.
I have an employee timetable from July 1988 somewhere.

The airport opened in the mid 50's as the overhaul base for TWA. It was called Mid Continent International..MCI. The name today is Kansas City International but retains the MCI code. The airlines moved from MKC--Municipal, now called Downtown airport, in Nov of either 72 or 73. There has been a running discussion for years on the last commercial flight into MKC, a TWA connie or an Ozark DC 3.

Before Eastern had the MCI hub, did they even serve MCI? It seems to me they opened up the MCI station as a hub, sort of like America West did in CMH.
You're correct. EA did not serve MCI until they opened the hub in late 1983. It's quite odd because before they opened the KC hub they already served the vast majority of 2nd tier cities out west they began serving from KC- cities such as Omaha, Reno and Tulsa. KC was one of the final destinations to come online for EA before the airline began to contract in the mid-late 80s.

UA did in fact have a "connecting complex"in mci back in the late 70s/early early 80s.....when i say connecting complex i mean it in the same way as what ua had in mco back in the early 90s.........mostly midwestern cities conx to east coast west coast cities..i flew from ORD-CID-MCI-LAX when i was 10 or 11 yrs old..any one in here remember when ua had a "connecting complex" in MEM?????
