why does British airways operate all 57 747-400s out of lhr and only 777s and 767s out of lgw and why do they only have 1 long haul a/c based at man can anyone bring me meaning behind the madness !

BA don't operate any 767s out of Gatwick anymore. They moved all the 744/763 long hauls to Heathrow several years ago. The 763 at Manchester is for the 1 daily JFK flight, which isn't even a mainline BA operated flight. Still, I guess they could move a 772 for that packed Manchester-Glasgow rush hour flight.

I'm not sure what you mean by madness here - it makes sense to centralise as much as possible at LHR for BA, especially with regards to maintenance, connections, etc. There is also the point regarding employment contracts - most (if not all) of the LGW-based staff are employed under a different contract to the LHR ones - this has been discussed here before a few times.
Also, as FLVILLA said above, the vast majority of traffic exists at LHR, and as a result the highest amount of capacity exists there to handle this.
