One of my friends is flying with SAA to London later this year. He has booked seats 53A & B on the outbound flight, and 80A & B (on the upper deck) on the return flight.
Since these flights will be on the 747-400, I want to know if the seats mentioned above are in the emergency exit rows...he specifically asked for exit row seats, so I want to confirm it for him.
I believe SAA's 744's have three different layouts. SAV, SAW, SAX & SAY share one layout, SAK & SAZ are the same and then SBK & SBS as well, therefore I don't know if it could make a difference?
I suppose one of my fellow South Africans would be able to help, but of course anybody who could help, is welcome to reply!

That's going to be tough to tell. There are five, repeat five different seating arrangements on SAA's 744's although a couple of them look the same. Anyways, here's a link to them.

Generally speaking SAK and SAZ operate on SA234/235 (the earlier JNB-LHR-JNB service) I think because they have the satellite phone system. Do you know which flight number?

Seats 53A & B are located about 3 rows to the front of door L4. Y-class emergency exit rows are located at rows 45 (LD) and 84 (UD) on ZS-SAK, ZS-SAZ, ZS-SAV, ZS-SAW, ZS-SAX and ZS-SAY. On ZS-SBK and ZS-SBS they are located at rows 45 and 62 (LD), as well as row 84 (UD).
Usually the exit row seats are reserved for Voyager Elite Members, although sometimes not even your FF status will necessarily mean that you will get them.
