The Future Of NCL Airport?

Hello.

I was just wondering what was happening with NCL nowadays. How is it affected by the aviation white-paper? I have been reading their website, and they are talking about a runway extension. Is this confirmed or likely, and also what about the terminal - is that going to be expanded any? Will they have more than one pier?

It has been years since I have been there - and it used to be that it had no departures area - when you went through security, you went down into the pier and boarded the a/c - you had to wait until your flight was called. I've heard it has changed and I just wondered if anyone could tell me about it.

NCL's long-term masterplan includes an expansion of its terminal facilities to meet a forecast 10 million passengers a year by 2030. It is also intending to extend the runway by 360m. As there is much local support for the airport and a relatively small number of people adversely affected by exapnsion it shouldn't cause too many issues.

The White Paper added little on NCL, except supporting these plans. There have been sompe proposals mentioned to look at a possible future rail link to the airport (as opposed to the Metro).

The terminal will be expanded and runway extended, and I think some developments will take place south of the runway, but apart from that, not much is needing changed from today's airport.
The runway extension will give the A330s and 767s that fly to Sanford a little more leeway and will probably also allow nonstop 747 flights to Florida etc.

The White paper (in front of me) says 10 million by 2030 - not seen the exact NCL masterplan so can't say whether this is a typo or not.

I would love to be able to extend the terminal in FlightSim to match the future proposals, and take a visit one day.

In the picture above, you see the fuel farm at the top. Thats being moved, and the termina being expanded in that direction with the possibility of another pier being built.

I would think so too - mind you if its going to make 10 million by 2010 - its got a way to go as its on about 4 million at the moment (?). Will need some very heavy lo-co expansion to get up there in five years.

Hope the airport does well though for the locals - lived in NCL for a while and loved the place - didn't want to leave  Smile

Last year it had 4.8 million.
The year before was 3.5 million.

easyJet now have a 6 a/c base, FR fly to Dublin and Bergamo, HLX fly to Hanover, Munich and Cologne.
And it's even busier during the summer, with up to 9 based charter a/c as well as foreign charter airlines and up to 4 flights a week to Orlando Sanford

So its not beyond the realms of possibility if easy keep push their expansion then, charter grows and others move in.

As a slight aside, do the Icelanders still fly down to NCL to do their shopping at the Metro Centre as in the past?

Anyway thanks for the info - I think it would be great with a new pier. I used to live in the far east, and our trips to/from Jakarta used to start and end at NCL - we used to get down to LHR using Dan Air!

I feel so OLD!

I suspect it involves a stop at somewhere like Bangor, Maine in order to do so.

That must be a flight from hell - must be at least 10 hours, right ? In a 757 - blimey, not fun at all !

For the stop in BGR, do pax clear US Immigration/Customs in BGR or remain on board and clear at SFB ?

I still go to the Metro Centre from time to time. The equivalent down here (Merry Hill Centre - I call it the Merry Hell Centre) is a pile of crap - I hate it.

The future will involve the flying club going out of business, as the extorionate landing fees for us are just too much. 25quid a shot, even for NCL based a/c is a rip off, and no doubt the greedy NCL airport will further increase this charge

The runway is sufficient for fully loaded A330's and 767-300's flying to SFB. I flew BY 767-300 from NCL to MCO in 1999 and in October 2004 flew fully loaded A330 with monarch to SFB. Having said that... we were almost on the A1 motorway before we rotated.....lol. Both of these flights were non stop!

Also flew long haul to Toronto on a Air Transat A310....another tough one to get airborne from NCL.

Ready 4 Pushback NCL has always had a departure area. Its changed a great deal in the last 15 years but there has always been a departure lounge. In June 1988 I flew to Tenerife from NCL and the departure lounge was quite big but had no windows. Then they installed windows and then they extended and built the international terminal and made the old building purely 'domestic'.

The international terminal has had further work done to the departures area and its actually really nice...plenty of shops/bars/restaurants etc...

You don't go through customs and immigration - thank god - that would be terrible to go through twice with all of that stuff you have to give them now! You just get off when they refuel the plane, and sit in a bit of the terminal - it was being re-done when I was there so all there was were seats and fans!

I hope you weren't as the A1 is a bit far from the runway! (A696 maybe?)

I hate the fact that there is no viewing area anymore, you can't see anything without a ticket and even then you can't go outside! I used to love goin up to the 3rd floor when I was a little'un and watching all the planes - I say 'all the', but there wasn't that many!

About that runway extension - they've been talking about it for years but it never happens, and would need to have a road re- routed around it if they did! Theres also problems with coal mine I think, as this was a problem when they originally extended the runway years and years ago! - but correct me if I'm wrong - maybe thats not a problem now? - I would love for some new types to come - hopefully old - VC10 please - I know thats wishful thinking, but we get a DC8 so you never know!

And those scandinavians should come back n shop in the Metro Centre - its propa massive now!!!

I just wish more planes would fly over my house, but people allways complain when they do! - stupid people - now it only happens once in a blue moon!

The runway isn't needed for big twins and their good power-to-weight ratios (the A330 positioning down to MAN practically jumps off the runway but even full to SFB isn't a problem.)

The runway extension is actually required for fully loaded A321s and 737-800s flying to Greece (limits of range) during the summer who don't have such a good power-to-weight ratio....and sometimes have to make a tech stop in Teeside. It's all due to Callerton Hill at the end of the runway.

However, with only about 4 tech stops required each year, it's going to be a long time before a business case can be made for a million-pound(s) extension.

Long haul

Continental is likely with a daily 757 Newark route in 2006. Emirates is another possibility, with more UK regional services mooted such as Belfast, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Bristol. I think it is a matter of time for these two. Zoom is also a good bet with their recent addition of flights from Cardiff and Belfast to Toronto, Newcastle is undoubtedly high on their list of potential destinations. Air Transat will likely increase capacity in summer 2006 by using an A330. On the charter side, a Cancun flight is likely, providing the Dom Rep flights prove popular this year. Orlando/Sanford is very strong this year and hopefully this will be kept up in the future.

European scheduled

The bulk of growth in the european market will undoubtedly come from the low cost airlines. easyJet will be at the top of the list. Possible destinations include Amsterdam, Cork, Shannon, Warsaw, Krakow, Valencia, Madrid, Almeria, Ibiza, Faro, Dortmund, Basel, London Luton, London Gatwick, Pisa and Venice. Along with some of these destinations will come more based aircraft. Ryanair is looking at more routes from the North East, however, whether NCL or MME will benefit from these additions is unclear. Possible destinations include Oslo, Hamburg, Shannon, Murcia, Venice, Pisa and Gerona. There still exists gaps in several continental markets, which if not picked up by FR or U2 could be tried by the likes of Wizz Air, Norweigan.no and Skyeurope. Flybe has a strong presence in the French market and regional french destinations may come into play in the future.

Domestic

The bulk of growth on the domestic front will probably be headed by Flybe. Rumoured additions to the NCL network include Inverness, Aberdeen, Norwich, Southend and Birmingham. The Exeter route will mature to twice daily and if Eastern pull out of the SOU route, this will go to 3 daily. Speaking of Eastern, it is as yet unclear as to how they are performing up against BE on the SOU route. They have ABZ to themselves, but this will undoubtedly change in the future. The London City route has come up in discussion several times recently, and there is a market for such a service. Possible operators include Eastern and VLM. EUjet will have to work hard to make the MSE route work, and a Shannon-Newcastle route would be a worthy addition. BA will continue to ply the LHR and LGW routes. There are several domestic destinations ripe for service: London City, London Luton, Bournemouth, Norwich and Inverness, as well as increased competition on exisiting routes.

Just throwing a few thoughts around, and many of these flights may never happen, but the market at NCL is far from saturated, and the list of possibilities is growing by season.
