As of June Germanwings will open a third base in Germany when it commences flights from SXF to Ankara, Düsseldorf, Stockholm, Zagreb, Munich, Split and Istanbul. Including the two planes used from STR and CGN for the Berlin runs 4U will have four planes fly out of SXF (two planes based @ SXF).

Looks like they aim for the big Turkish community in Berlin.

The real big news here is another new domestic route and destination within Germany. The new SXF-DUS-SXF route is an interesting development - not only will it make life for the newly enlarged DBA a bit more difficult, it is also another indicator of the slow replacement of LH tangential routes with 4U flights.

But Germanwings will base only 2 aircraft at SXF initially...
Interesting will be the impact on the market to Russia as they seriously intend to fly SXF-MOW (don´t know yet which a/p in Moscow they choose)

Hooray! Yesterday HLX flew their flight into ARN from HAJ and now we get 4U from SXF too. According to 4U the ARN-CGN service is very profitable. Also, there's a pretty big turkish comminty here in Stockholm too.

SAS_A330-300,
You didn't happen to be at ARN when the first HLX plane came by?

If now only 4U or HLX would add ARN from STR...

I doubt that this is a route where 4U will replace any LH flight though. I could see LH pull out on CGN/STR-DRS for example, or have 4U take over the flights from STR to HAJ. An interesting route would maybe be CGN-HAM, would LH let 4U fight the battle against HLX?

They said that from the beginning that they don't want to open any route in competition with Easy.
Their SXF adventure is just to prevent Easy from being too succesfull in Berlin. U4 doesn't want a blood bath, just set a stop for Easy.
But will Easy defend the Berlin market and begin new routes in competition?

Easyjet will never fly to DUS.
What Germanwings is focussing on are routes where non-german AOC holders can not operate. So from Germany to outside the european union, such as turkey, croatia etc.

Its the first step from Germanwings to catch market in Berlin.
Later they will go and take the challenge and try to kick EZY out of the market.
