Disabled Aircraft At Port Au Prince

They're reportedly not taking traffic because of a disabled aircraft on runway 9-27... Anyone hear/see anything...?

Something has happened as AA 803 from MIA to PAP is overflew PAP and landed at SDQ. Currently FLIFO has an ETD of 1645 local, just minutes from now. We'll see if that holds up.

AA 837 from JFK to PAP made it in early at 1248 local and was scheduled to leave PAP for JFK as AA896 at 1414 local. It has been delayed until 1600 according to FLIFO, which of course has long passed. No update on it or flight 803 which diverted to SDQ. Still can't find any info on what exactly happened.

Based on 837's arrival and the scheduled departure of 896, whatever happened happened between 1248 and 1414 local.

I worked airfield ops for a US govt contractor at PAP in late '94-early '95 and I remember 3-4 times a week when ops were shut down due to IFE's. The most frequent culprit was a DC-6 or 7 from parts unknown which declared an IFE every time he landed. Normally had one engine shut down, with two more spewing smoke...

PAP is third-world airport ops at its' finest. Must be seen to be believed...

AA 803 which diverted to SDQ now has an ETD of 2000 local, the crew must have gone illegal as FLIFO says they are awaiting crew. Consequently, flight 1908 from PAP to MIA has been delayed until 2100 local. 803 was turn around as 1908 at PAP. Still no updated information on AA 896 from PAP to JFK. Also, still no further information on what exactly has happened... I've searched the net for information.

Other then what BHMNONREV wrote above, I read several articles about widespread power outages in Port au Prince the last few days. Perhaps this could be part of the problem.

This was a frequent problem as well, in addition to difficulties in getting disabled aircraft removed from 9-27. Compounded by the fact that PAP has no taxiways makes for some interesting daily ops. My guess is AA is used to these distractions by now..
